In November 2023, Des Buckingham left Mumbai City FC to sign for his childhood club Oxford United.
Des Buckingham‘s arrival at Oxford United brought a blend of anticipation and uncertainty. Taking the reins mid-season is never easy, especially with the expectations riding high. His stint at Mumbai City FC, where he clinched remarkable success, had set a precedent. But football is a different ball game in England, and Buckingham knew the challenges ahead.
The initial games were a mixed bag. A disappointing loss against Cheltenham was a harsh reality check, but a subsequent win against Burton provided a glimmer of hope. Buckingham’s commitment to possession football was evident, but results fluctuated. The recent 5-0 drubbing of Peterborough United showcased glimpses of promise, but setbacks against Lincoln City and Stevenage tempered the optimism.
Exiting the FA Cup in January was a big blow to the club. Defeats against Coventry (FA Cup) and AFC Wimbledon (League One) highlighted areas needing improvement. Yet, Des Buckingham remains steadfast, emphasising the importance of continuity and understanding among the squad.
Des Buckingham has an extensive and diverse coaching skill
Des Buckingham’s coaching journey, from Wellington Phoenix to Mumbai City FC, has equipped him with a diverse skill set. The stint in India, where he clinched the ISL Shield amidst breaking numerous records, showcased his tactical acumen. Now, at Oxford, he faces a new set of challenges but brings with him a wealth of experience.
Buckingham’s philosophy of possession football is evident in the team’s style of play. The fluidity in passing and movement speaks volumes of the groundwork laid by the manager. However, consistency remains elusive, and Buckingham acknowledges the need to iron out inconsistencies.
As Oxford United navigate the rigours of League One, Buckingham’s tenure will be defined by results. The sixth position in the league table keeps the promotion dream alive, but challenges lie ahead. With each game, Buckingham and his squad strive to forge a stronger understanding, a cohesive unit capable of facing any adversary.
In the end, Des Buckingham’s success at Oxford United will be measured not just by victories but by the imprint he leaves on the club. His commitment to possession football and trust in the process are evident, but only time will tell if they bear fruit. For now, the journey continues, with Buckingham at the helm, steering Oxford United towards their final league game against Exeter City, against whom the U’s are desperate for a victory to keep their playoff hopes alive.
