Durand Cup 2024: List of all host cities
The Durand Cup will kickstart from 27th July 2024.
The 133rd edition of the Durand Cup will kickoff the 2024-25 Indian football season from 27 July onward. The tournament will finish on August 31 and will see the best football teams from around the country compete for the coveted title.
The Durand Cup is the oldest existing football competition in Asia and the fifth-oldest worldwide. It currently acts as the curtain-raiser for the Indian football campaign. It serves as an ideal pre-season tournament for teams to try out different tactics and increase their match sharpness ahead of the league campaign.
Mohun Bagan are the defending champions of the Durand Cup after having defeated East Bengal in the final last year. The Durand Cup 2024 will feature a total of 43 matches, played in a round-robin league-cum-knockout format. There will be 24 teams competing, divided into six groups of four teams each. Six group toppers and two best second-placed teams will make the knockout stage.
The Indian Army, which organizes the Durand Cup, has decided to host it in four different cities in 2024. Kolkata will be a major host city and will host three groups. Jamshedpur, Shillong and Kokrajhar will be the three other cities to host matches. They will host all the matches of one group each.
Kokrajhar will act as a host city for the second straight year. The likes of Jamshedpur and Shillong have been added this year in an attempt to help spread the reach of the Durand Cup.
In Kolkata, the iconic Salt Lake Stadium will host the majority of the matches. It will host the opening game and also the final on August 31. The other matches will be hosted at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan, which has hosted matches from the I-League and the Calcutta Football League in the past.
The JRD Tata Sports Complex, which is the home ground of Jamshedpur FC in the Indian Super League, will host all the matches held in Jamshedpur. In Shillong, the matches will be held at the 30,000-strong Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
Like last year, the SAI (Sports Authority of India) Stadium will host the Durand Cup matches held in Kokrajhar in 2024. The official schedule or the groups for the upcoming competition is yet to be confirmed. But all 13 ISL teams, along with teams from the I-League, the Indian Armed Forces and some foreign teams are going to take part in the tournament.
