The Durand Cup 2026 will begin in thrilling fashion when old rivals East Bengal and Mohun Bagan go to war in the opening match of the tournament at the VYBK Stadium (Kolkata) on Saturday, 25 July (2026). With both sides being among heavy favorites to win the competition, this will be an eventful clash as the Kolkata rivals push to get a strong start to the tournament and also denting their opponents’ hopes of dominating in the tournament.

The Durand Cup is still going to be a pre-season phase of the 2026-27 season for both sides, who are yet to reach their best under new head coaches.

While East Bengal will play their first match under Antonio Habas, the Mariners will also kick off the Panagiotis Dilmperis era and there is utmost motivation in both teams to get off to a strong start in their new gaffer’s stint.

Lalengmawia Ralte vs Jeakson Singh

There should be quite a few physical duels between the two, as they aim to neutralize the other player’s threat and help their side control things in the midfield.

Edmund Lalrindika vs Rahul Bheke

Edmund Lalrindika had a pretty good 2025-26 season with East Bengal, scoring four goals them in their ISL-winning campaign after returning to the club last year.

He is now going to push to get more regular playing time under Antonio Habas and knows that performing strongly at the Durand Cup could elevate his standing in the squad. Edmund, who scored against Mohun Bagan in the ISL derby last season, will now aim to torment the Mariners once again in the opening match of the 2026 Durand Cup.

However, he’ll face a tricky test against fellow national teammate Rahul Bheke – who looks poised to make his debut for Mohun Bagan against the Torchbearers.

Rakip should be able to be fully fit to play Torchbearers in the derby and he’ll be motivated to prove why East Bengal should instill him as a starting right-back this season.

For Liston, it’ll be a case of being unpredictable with his dribbles to trick the defender, get the ball into the final third and either send in inviting crosses or take powerful shots on goal.

Rakip, who will also look to make forward runs to create chances for East Bengal, will need to mark Colaco sharply to keep him quiet and whoever comes out on top of this clash can give their side a huge advantage in that wide area.
