Jamshedpur FC vs Defenders FC Preview - Team news, lineups | Durand Cup 2026

Red Miners eye big win over debutants from Sri Lanka in Durand Cup opener in Ranchi
The Birsa Munda Football Stadium in Jharkhand’s capital Ranchi is all set to host its first ever Durand Cup 2026 match featuring home side Jamshedpur FC and debutants Defenders FC of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces.
The Red Miners have a new home in Ranchi. Despite hailing from the Steel City of Jamshedpur, the club represents the heart and soul of the tribal state.
Defenders FC of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces will be keen to make their Durand Cup 2026 debut a memorable one.
The Stakes
Jamshedpur FC

A new dawn for Jamshedpur FC under Kaizad Ambapardiwala, who has previously led the youth and reserves side of Jamshedpur FC. The Red Miners have named an all Indian squad. A top spot finish will be crucial for the Red Miners after failing to advance past the Top eight in the last two editions.
Group C is pretty tricky, hosting ISL side SC Delhi, Indian Air Force and the Defenders SC. This is a must-win game for Jamshedpur FC to keep their table-toppers’ hopes alive. Albino Gomes is expected to start between the sticks and captain Pronay Halder will lead the side from midfield.
Defenders FC

The Sri Lankan outfit, earlier known as Sri Lanka Army SC was renamed to Defenders FC in 2018 and will be making their debut in the 135th edition of the Durand Cup. They are a big name in Sri Lankan football, having won the Sri Lanka Champions League twice in 2009 and 2019.
They have also represented Sri Lanka in Asia, having made 2 appearances at the AFC President’s Cup and the AFC Cup Preliminary Round in 2020. They will be a major force to reckon with, and we can expect a thrilling opener between two of the finest sides in the competition.
Team News
Jamshedpur FC will feature an all Indian side and it will be interesting to see whether local lad Nikhil Barla starts from the wing or as a fullback.
Sri Lankan coach Rajamany will lead them. They boast an all-Sri Lankan squad except for the presence of Cameroonian midfielder Fabassou.
Head-to-Head Record (All-Time)
This will be the first time when these two sides will lock horns with each other.
Predicted Lineups
Jamshedpur (4-2-3-1)
Albino Gomes (GK); Nikhil Barla, Pratik Chaudhari, Sarthal Golui, Provat Lakra; Pronay Halder, Raynier; Gabriel, Ritwik, Sanan; Murgaokar
Defenders FC (4-2-3-1)
Md Luthfi (GK); Roshan, Jayathunga, De Silva, Ahamed; Lakmal, Rahuman; Kumara, Prabath, Shihab; Rifkhan
Players to Watchout
Nikhil Barla (Jamshedpur FC)

Nikhil Barla will be excited to play in front of his home crowd at the Birsa Munda Stadium in Ranchi. Rising from humble beginnings, Barla chose hard work over shortcuts, and the lad from Khunti was recently called to the Indian national team.
Barla can play as a fullback as well as a wingback. It will be interesting to see whether coach Kaizad deploys Barla as a right back to put Rosenberg Gabriel upfront on the right wing. He will be a threat from the right flank with his overlapping and accelerated runs.
Rifkhan Mohamed (Defenders FC)
The 26-year-old Sri Lankan striker from Trincomalee will be up against an all Indian defensive setup of Jamshedpur FC, boasting the likes of veteran players like Sarthak Golui and Pratik Chaudhari.
He has previously plied his trade with Sri Lanka Police SC and has represented the Sri Lanka National Team on several occasions, such as the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers, World Cup qualifiers and the SAFF Championship.
He will be a key player to watch out for Defenders in the upcoming game.
