A proud symbol of India’s footballing legacy, the Durand Cup is Asia’s oldest and the world’s third-oldest football tournament. Organized by the Indian Army, it has served as a breeding ground for India’s finest football talent for over a century.
The inaugural edition was held in Shimla in 1888, before the tournament moved to New Delhi in 1940, where it remained for more than seven decades. In 2019, the Durand Cup came under the aegis of the Eastern Command and shifted to the football heartland of the East, with Kolkata, the Mecca of Indian football and headquarters of the Eastern Command, as its home base.
Over the past six years, the tournament has grown from a single-city event into a multi-city, multi-state sporting spectacle. And this year for the first time ever, the Durand Cup is being played across five states – Kolkata, Ranchi, Guwahati, Imphal and Shillong,.
Adding to its uniqueness, the tournament champions receive three iconic trophies: the Durand Cup, the Shimla Trophy, and the President’s Cup.
