The 1940s marked the beginning of East Bengal‘s golden era. In 1942, they won their first Calcutta Football League (CFL) title, a trophy they have claimed over 39 times, a record. The Durand Cup, one of the oldest football tournaments in the world, saw East Bengal as champions for the first time in 1949. This victory heralded a period of dominance in Indian football.
The 1950s and 1960s saw East Bengal consolidate their position with multiple victories at major tournaments. The club won the IFA Shield, another prestigious tournament, for the first time in 1943 and have since lifted the title 29 times, more than any other club.
