FC Goa were handed a massive blow even before the Super Cup 2025-26 semifinal kicked off, as captain Iker Guarrotxena received a shock red card in the tunnel.

The Spaniard, who was expected to lead the defending champions on a crucial night, was removed from the matchday squad after the referee dismissed him moments before the teams walked out at the JLN Stadium in Fatorda.

The incident forced an immediate reshuffle, with Javier Siverio stepping into the XI and Borja Herrera taking over the armband. However, FC Goa led the fixture 2-0 at the end of the first half, courtesy goals from David Timor and Brison Fernandes.

Why was Iker Guarrotxena sent off?

Although the details remained limited, the dismissal stemmed from an altercation involving Iker Guarrotxena near the tunnel while both sides lined up for the kickoff routine. The referee interpreted the confrontation as dissent serious enough to warrant a straight red card.

As a result, FC Goa had to adjust their plans abruptly, losing their most influential leader before a ball was kicked. The moment stunned supporters and added unexpected tension to an already high-stakes fixture.

Commentators later explained that the situation escalated quickly, and officials interpreted Iker’s reaction as crossing the threshold of acceptable conduct.

They added that FC Goa were informed of the dismissal right away, prompting them to replace him before the players walked out. Although the cameras did not capture the moment, the sudden change confirmed how severe the officials considered the situation.

FC Goa’s run in the Super Cup 2025-26

Despite the setback, FC Goa entered the semifinal against Mumbai City FC with confidence after topping their group. They recovered well from an opening defeat to NorthEast United FC and then secured victories over Jamshedpur FC and Inter Kashi to book their spot in the last four.

Their form in the Super Cup came in contrast to their struggles in the AFC Champions League 2, where they lost five straight matches and exited the tournament early. Even so, defending their Super Cup crown offered a chance to regain momentum, especially with home support behind them in Fatorda.
