I League 2024-25 Final standings after Court of Arbitration for Sport's final verdict

Inter Kashi have been named the I League 2024-25 champions

For the first time in the history of Indian football, the I League champions have been declared off the pitch. After a lot of drama, a series of goof-ups and anticipation, Inter Kashi have finally been declared as the new I-League 2024-25 Champions.

In a rare turn of events, both Inter Kashi and Churchill Brothers were seen celebrating after their final league stage game and declared themselves as I League champions in their social media posts.

AIFF even-handed the I League trophy to Churchill Brothers officially in a presentation ceremony and later asked the Goan outfit to return the coveted silverware.

To express their dismay and frustration over this incident and citing a lack of transparency and fairness, Churchill Brothers even boycotted the Kalinga Super Cup. Inter Kashi, on the other hand, went on to pull out a big upset when they shocked Bengaluru FC in the Round of 16.

After a long wait of three months, the Swiss-based CAS has overturned AIFF’s previous points deduction against Inter Kashi for fielding an ineligible player. This decision alone has completely changed the I League standings and has seen a major overhaul in the Indian second division.

In this article, we shall take a closer look at the final I League 2024-25 standings after the CAS verdict.

After the CAS verdict ruled in favour of the Varanasi outfit, Antonio Lopez Habas’ Inter Kashi became the new I League champions with 42 points under their belt.

After the scores were levelled 1-1 until the regulation time, Kashi scored twice in the stoppage time to win the game 3-1 and grab all three points in their final fixture against Rajasthan United FC.

Had Churchill Brothers won their final game against Real Kashmir, it would have put an end to all speculations as the Goan side would have been the undisputed champions of the I League. A win in the final game against Real Kashmir, which ended in a 1-1 draw, would have taken them to 42 points.

Despite being levelled on points with the Uttar Pradesh outfit, Churchill Brothers were ahead of Kashi in head-to-head and also had a far superior goal difference. The draw in the final game saw them settle for 40 points and will now have to make peace with the second spot.

Real Kashmir and Gokulam Kerala were still in contention for I-League trophy until final matchweek

Had Rajasthan United managed to hold Kashi to a 1-1 draw, and Real Kashmir got the better of Churchill Brothers, it would have opened new doors of opportunities for Real Kashmir and Gokulam Kerala. Though a lot of permutations and combinations were at stake, everything was still possible.

A defeat for Gokulam and a draw for Real Kashmir has seen them finish with 37 points. The North-South battle ended in Real Kashmir’s favour as they were ahead of Gokulam Kerala in head-to-head and grabbed the third spot in the table.

Mid-table finish for Rajasthan, Namdhari and Dempo

Rajasthan United had a rare opportunity to determine the new I League champions. Alain Oyarzun’s equaliser in the 69th minute against Inter Kashi saw more firecrackers being burst at Panaji than in Jaipur. However, they conceded two late goals in the injury time and succumbed to a 3-1 defeat against Kashi.

Namdhari saw their points getting deducted after fielding an ineligible player against Kashi. They ended their campaign with 29 points, whereas Dempo SC also had a decent season and finished with the same points.

Relegation reckons Delhi FC and SC Bengaluru

SC Bengaluru were promoted to the I League after becoming the I League 2 Champions in the 2023-24 season. However, they failed to cope with the intensity and competitiveness in the I League and have been relegated back to the third division.

Delhi FC, on the other hand, witnessed a shocking downfall after finishing sixth last season. They had a disastrous campaign after winning just three games out of 22 matches.

Whether Inter Kashi will be promoted to the ISL is still unclear amidst the uncertainty revolving around the future of the ISL due to the impending MRA expiration. However, this tale of twists and turns has finally ended with the Varanasi outfit having the last laugh.
