Diamond Harbour are IFL Champions

The final matchday of the penultimate matchweek of the IFL Championship stage took us to the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa, where the home team Dempo locked horns with Diamond Harbour.

From Shillong to Hyderabad, teams were cheering for Dempo SC to win the game and keep the Harbour Boys away from the silverware. The prayers were answered, and Marcus Joseph scored for Dempo in the 50th minute to make it 1-0 for the home side.

Just when it seemed that the Championship was slipping away from Diamond Harbour’s hands, Hugo Diaz scored the equaliser in the 91st minute of the stoppage time to make it 1-1. That goal was enough for the Kolkata outfit to secure promotion to the Indian Super League.

Let’s take a closer look at how the IFL points table has changed after this game and find out how tonight’s results will impact the championship prospects of different teams.

A brief look at the IFL 2025-26 points table

The win takes Diamond Harbour to 29 points, and that means, even if they lose the next game against Shillong, they will still be ahead by one point. Dempo had a rare opportunity to pull one of the biggest upsets in the IFL, but alas, the Goan outfit had to settle for a draw.

Dempo are at 14 points and jointly at the bottom of the Championship stage with Chanmari. Dempo will host Sreenidhi next and will be hoping to end the season with a win over the Deccan outfit.

Players with the most goals after matchday 16 of IFL 2025-26

  • Marcus Joseph jr (Dempo SC) – 8 goals
  • Hugo Diaz (Diamond Harbour FC) – 8 goals
  • Phrangki Buam (Shillong Lajong FC) – 7 goals
  • Everbrightson Sana (Shillong Lajong FC) – 6 goals
  • Zomuansanga (Aizawl FC) – 6 goals

What to expect from the next matches of IFL 2025-26

One final matchweek to go, and the Desert Vipers host Chanmari next. Rajasthan were one of the top contenders to win the title, but their dip in form saw them get derailed. They will have an opportunity to finish strongly with a win over Chanmari next.

So, hold your breath and keep a calculator beside you as things are becoming pretty interesting with every matchday. Every goal, every save, every single point counts and with such fine margins, you blink, and you are out of the title race.
