Jamshedpur FC are winless against Odisha FC in the last four games

The JRD Tata Sports Complex in Jamshedpur gears up to host the Matchweek 13 fixture of the Indian Super League, where home team Jamshedpur FC are all set to lock horns with former Super Cup champions Odisha FC in the title-deciding clash.

The Eastern derby featuring Jamshedpur and neighbors Odisha has been one of the most thrilling clashes in the history of the ISL. After all, not a single game to date has ended in a goalless draw between these two sides and we expect nothing different this time around.

Beating Odisha FC has been a herculean task for the Red Miners as they have lost every single of their last four encounters against the Juggernauts. But this time the ISL title and potentially a continental spot is at stake for the Red Miners, and this is a must-win game for them.

In this article, we take a ride down memory lane and find out how history has shaped this rivalry and take a look at some of the most intense games between these two sides.

It was against the Delhi Dynamos, Odisha FC’s former identity, against whom the Red Miners scored their first-ever goal in ISL history. Odisha FC came to the ISL in 2019, and ever since then, there has been an interesting affair.

It was Antonio Iriondo at the helm of Jamshedpur when Odisha FC made their ISL debut against the Red Miners. By the first 45 minutes, Bikash Jairu was sent off, and Aridane Santana scored the equaliser. But Sergio Cidocha had different plans Jamshedpur won the game 2-1 against ten-man Odisha FC.

But Odisha FC bounced back in the reverse fixture, winning it 2-1. They were led by current Aston Villa youth team coach Josep Gombau, who left an indelible mark on Odisha’s ISL history.

Then, it was Owen Coyle who took over the reins in the Steel City and he remained the only gaffer in JFC history to remain unbeaten against the Juggernauts. Not only that, he won three out of the four games against the Kalinga Warriors.

In their Shield-winning season, Jamshedpur completed a league double over Odisha, beating them 5-1 and 4-0 and eventually Stuart Baxter was also sacked after that defeat against Red Miners.

But after Coyle’s departure, Sergio Lobera arrived and beating Lobera was not everyone’s cup of tea. From Scott Cooper to Khalid Jamil, nobody could even clinch a single point against Lobera’s Odisha and suffered back-to-back defeats in the last four games.

All-time head-to-head record

Total matches – 12

Jamshedpur FC won – 5

Odisha FC won – 6

Matches drawn – 1

Apart from the Owen Coyle era, it has been Odisha who has dominated this fixture historically. But there is Owen Coyle back in the Jamshedpur dugout and unfortunately, Sergio Lobera will not be in the touchlines for the Kalinga Warriors.

Owen Coyle does not operate on records and regardless of whether the other results goes his way or not, he will be looking forward to continue his unbeaten run and dominance over Odisha FC.

It’s technically the title-defining clash. If Jamshedpur wins the next game, Punjab FC and Mumbai City play a draw, Mohun Bagan SG loses the game, and East Bengal doesn’t win against Inter Kashi, this would be arguably the biggest miracle in ISL history.
