NorthEast United FC 1-1 Bengaluru FC: Key Takeaways from ISL 2026-27 Clash
A late strike from Vinith rescues Bengaluru as NorthEast suffers a heartbreak.
A match built on speed and missed finishing ended with a stoppage-time twist in ISL 2026-27. NorthEast United FC hit Bengaluru on the break in the 15th minute and spent the next 75 trying to turn that edge into a cushion.
Bengaluru kept shooting from everywhere without hurting anyone. Then, in the 93rd minute, Sunil Chhetri found Vinith Venkatesh in the box and the visitors had their point.
NorthEast’s transitions are lethal, but the finishing left points on the table

The opener was the best argument for how this side wants to play. Bengaluru FC were pushing forward when NorthEast won the ball and went vertical at once. Ethyan González carried the break himself, drawing the defence toward him before releasing Jithin M.S., who took the ball in the centre of the box and finished left-footed into the bottom-left corner. The whole move was a handful of touches. Ethyan carried, Jithin arrived late and unmarked, and Ajaraie’s presence in the attacking line kept the centre-backs from stepping out.
That chemistry kept producing chances. Ajaraie had an early opportunity in the 2nd minute and a better one in the 21st, which flashed just wide of the right post from the centre of the box. Ethyan’s effort from the edge of the area in the same minute was blocked. He then forced a comfortable save from Gurpreet Sandhu at the start of the second half, tried again from distance in the 68th, and was blocked once more in the 82nd.
Many of these efforts came from outside the area or from shooting angles that favoured the keeper. The transition play created good positions, but the final action was often a hurried or speculative strike. Ajaraie’s 88th-minute free-kick over the bar and his 90+1′ effort, which Gurpreet saved, were the last examples. A side that creates this much on the break and scores once will eventually be punished, and that is what happened.
Gurmeet Singh kept NorthEast in front, but pressure told in the end
Bengaluru’s attempt count was high and the quality was uneven. Going by the live blog, they logged roughly 16 attempts, but only the three saved efforts and the equaliser were on target. Many came from distance. Varshneya’s early efforts were blocked, Borja Martínez’s 17th-minute strike was blocked, and his 44th-minute free-kick missed the target. Several headers, from Ryan Williams (60′), Ashique Kuruniyan (34′) and Manuel de Iriondo (80′), went wide of the posts.
Three saves stood out. Gurmeet got down well to deny Varshneya’s low shot in the 24th minute, again to stop Borja’s left-footed effort aimed at the bottom-left corner in the 33rd, and once more to keep out Borja’s shot at the start of the second half in the 48th. Each was a shot Bengaluru’s attackers would have expected to score.
The visitors earned the equaliser through persistence, but the 90 minutes before it showed a recurring problem. They could get into the final third and into the box, yet they struggled to produce clean, central finishes.
Bengaluru’s bench changed the quality of the final action

Pep Muñoz made the most of his substitutions. Chhetri came on for Varshneya, with Suresh Singh Wangjam replacing Ashique Kuruniyan and Monirul Molla and Vinith Venkatesh coming on late for Lalremtluanga and Manuel de Iriondo. Chhetri’s first notable contribution was a right-footed chance from the centre of the penalty area in the 80th minute that missed the target. His second was the decisive one. He turned provider in the box and found Vinith in space, and Vinith finished right-footed into the bottom-left corner, beyond Gurmeet.
On this evidence, the pass reads as a veteran forward recognising where the space was, which a tiring defence had stopped covering. The equaliser also shows the value of having fresh attackers who can finish. Bengaluru’s starters had taken plenty of shots without scoring, and the substitutes produced the only goal. Depth can change the quality of the final action, not just the number of attempts.
Injuries and a defensive block that held until it didn’t

The match was physically costly. NorthEast United FC lost Jithin M.S., their goalscorer, who was replaced by Parthib Gogoi because of an injury, and Macarton Nickson, replaced by Redeem Tlang in the same circumstances. Bengaluru lost Shivaldo Singh, replaced by Sandro Sakho, after he was booked for a hard tackle. There were also bookings for Ryan Williams, Pramveer Singh, and Menno Koch late on, which suggests the game was becoming scrappier.
NorthEast’s defensive shape did most of its job. They blocked several efforts from outside the box, including Borja’s 17th-minute strike and Ryan’s 45+2′ attempt, and kept Bengaluru’s crossing and headers from producing clean chances for long periods. Pramveer, who supplied an assist for one of Ethyan’s chances and also picked up a yellow card, was part of that balance between attack and defence. The weakness was late. With Jithin off and Nickson’s injury forcing another change, the block lost some of its structure in the final minutes, and Bengaluru found the space they needed.
The big picture
NorthEast extend their unbeaten start to eight points from four matches, following wins over Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Kerala Blasters and draws with Odisha FC and now Bengaluru. They will leave Guwahati feeling they dropped two points, given how many chances they created. The injuries to Jithin and Nickson matter more for their next fixture than the result does.
For Bengaluru, a late point preserves their unbeaten record and keeps them in contention after their 2–0 win over Chennaiyin. They did not break NorthEast down for most of the game, but they stayed in it and had substitutes who made the difference. That is a useful sign for a side with title ambitions.
