The Southern Derby ended in a 2-0 win for Bengaluru FC.
Bengaluru FC delivered a confident attacking performance against Chennaiyin FC in their 2026–27 Indian Super League game, securing a 2-0 advantage at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in the Southern Derby which was held on 17th October 2026.
The Blues showed their attacking quality, combining sharp movement, excellent passing and clinical finishing to put Chennaiyin FC under sustained pressure and create several promising opportunities in the final third.
The Blues started on the front foot, looking to exploit the spaces in the first half, Ryan Williams came close to creating the opening goal in the 10th minute with an excellent cross towards Mihailo Perovic at the far post, only for Nawaz to produce a timely save.
The breakthrough eventually arrived through a moment of attacking persistence. Borja Martínez unleashed a powerful effort that forced the goalkeeper into a save, but Williams reacted quickest to the rebound, guiding the ball into the net to give Bengaluru FC a deserved lead.
The second goal was a proof of Bengaluru FC’s ability to create chances through quick combinations and intelligent movement.
Ashique Kuruniyan and Borja Martínez combined well into the attacking third before Martínez delivered a beautifully floated cross into the penalty area.
Perović timed his run perfectly and rose above the defence to direct a powerful header into the net, doubling the Blues’ advantage and giving the home supporters another reason to celebrate.

Bengaluru FC Player Ratings (By Preethi)
Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere
Gurpreet Singh Sandhu – 7/10

Gurpreet delivered a composed performance between the sticks, making five saves and ensuring Bengaluru FC maintained their clean sheet.
He showed good reflexes when called upon and remained calm under pressure, dealing with Chennaiyin FC’s attempts with confidence. His distribution was another positive, as he looked comfortable playing the ball out and helping the Blues transition from defence into attack.
Ricky Meetei – 7/10
Ricky put in a solid defensive shift, recording five tackles, one block and one clearance as he worked hard to disrupt Chennaiyin FC’s attacking moves.
Ricky showed good commitment in his defensive duels and played an important role in helping Bengaluru FC maintain their defensive stability.
However, his yellow card proved costly, as it led to him getting substituted by Poojary
Menno Koch – 7/10

Koch put in a decent defensive shift, recording six clearances and helping Bengaluru FC keep Chennaiyin FC at bay.
He was effective in dealing with the opposition’s attacking threats, showing good awareness of danger and prioritising his defensive responsibilities.
However, Koch offered limited support going forward and was not particularly involved in Bengaluru FC’s attacking build-up.
Chinglensana Singh – 7/10
Sana Singh had a strong defensive performance, combining well-timed clearances with accurate long balls to help Bengaluru FC maintain control at the back.
He did well to stop Talal and Irfan, limiting their influence and making it difficult for Chennaiyin FC to build momentum in the attacking third.
Shivaldo Singh – 6/10
Shivaldo had a mixed game, showing some positive defensive qualities with his clearances and tackles, but his overall performance was let down by poor discipline and a lack of composure.
He struggled in his duels, frequently losing possession and allowing Chennaiyin FC opportunities to regain control.
His tendency to commit unnecessary fouls became a major concern, as he picked up a yellow card and continued to make mistimed challenges despite being on a booking. Shivaldo was fortunate to avoid a second yellow, with some of his tackles putting him at serious risk of being sent off.
Manuel de Iriondo – 8/10
Iriondo had an excellent all-round performance in midfield, combining defensive skills with composure and control in possession.
His 17 defensive contributions showed his work rate and ability to break up Chennaiyin FC’s attacks, making him an important presence in the middle of the pitch.
He was composed in midfield, distributed the ball well and helped Bengaluru FC maintain control of the game. Iriando also looked to contribute going forward, registering a shot that went off target.
Fanai – 7/10
Fanai was the anchor of Bengaluru FC’s midfield alongside Iriondo, putting in a composed and disciplined performance at the heart of the team.
He was excellent defensively, helping break up Chennaiyin FC’s attacks and providing the midfield with the stability needed to control the game.
Fanai was equally important in transition, moving the ball forward effectively and helping the Blues switch from defence to attack without losing their shape. He also got a shot that went off target.
Soham Varshneya – 7.5/10

Soham was one of Bengaluru FC’s most energetic performers, Soham brought plenty of intensity to both sides of the game.
He was proactive in taking on defenders, using his dribbling ability and direct approach to create opportunities and put Chennaiyin FC under pressure.
His contribution wasn’t limited to the attacking phase either, as he also got two tackles and two interceptions while also making important blocks to help the team defensively. Soham showed a good balance between carrying the ball forward, creating chances and tracking back when required.
He also registered a shot that went off target, showing his willingness to get involved in the final third

Ryan Williams – 8/10

Ryan had an incredible attacking performance, capping it off with a well-taken goal to give Bengaluru FC the lead.
Ryan was a constant threat throughout the game, creating chances and using his movement intelligently to exploit spaces in the Chennaiyin FC defence. His versatility was particularly valuable, as he operated centrally and occasionally took up the number 10 role, linking the midfield with the attack and helping the Blues transition quickly from defence to attack.
He showed good awareness in finding pockets of space, while his delivery from corners added another dimension to Bengaluru FC’s attacking play.
Borja Martinez – 7.5/10

Borja got an assist for Mihailo Perović’s goal and playing a key role in Bengaluru FC’s attacking combinations.
Borja showed excellent creativity and vision, consistently looking to create chances and find openings in the Chennaiyin FC defence. His contribution to the second goal was particularly impressive, as he combined neatly with Ashique Kuruniyan before delivering a cross for Perović to finish with a header.
Mihailo Perovic – 8.5/10

Perovic had an outstanding performance up front and got a goal to double Bengaluru FC’s advantage.
Perović created three chances and registered two shots on target alongside two off-target efforts, constantly testing the Chennaiyin FC defence with his movement and attacking intent. His goal was a highlight, as he timed his run perfectly to meet Borja Martínez’s cross and power a header into the net.
He came close to scoring earlier with an attempted shot over Nawaz that narrowly missed the target, but continued to push forward.
He also contributed defensively, recording two tackles and one interception while working hard off the ball. Perović kept pressing, creating opportunities and fighting for every ball until the closing stages of the game
Substitutes
Ashique Kuruniyan – 6.5/10
Ashique came on at half-time and brought pace to Bengaluru FC’s forward play. He looked confident taking on defenders and using his dribbling ability to drive into dangerous areas.
Ashique constantly looked to break through Chennaiyin FC’s defensive lines and create opportunities for his teammates. His combination play with Borja Martínez was good that led to Mihailo Perović’s second goal.
Nikhil Poojary – 6/10
Nikhil came on for Ricky Meitei and made a decent contribution defensively despite his limited minutes, recording one tackle, one interception and three clearances.
He also completed three accurate long passes, showing that he could contribute to building play and distributing the ball effectively. However, the biggest mistake was an unnecessary foul that earned him a yellow card.
Naorem Roshan Singh – 6.5/10
Roshan came on for Shivaldo in the 63rd minute and had a decent game defensively, showing good timing and commitment with his tackles.
He did his job well when it came to dealing with Chennaiyin FC’s attacking threats, but lacked his usual attacking influence going forward. Roshan is generally capable of offering more in the final third, particularly with his forward runs and ability to support the attack, but those qualities were less evident today.
Sunil Chhetri – 7/10
Sunil Chhetri came on in the 70th minute for the injured Soham Varshneya and immediately brought energy and intent to Bengaluru FC’s attack.
The captain looked sharp in the final third, creating chances and testing Nawaz with a powerful effort on his weaker foot, only to be denied by a good save from the Chennaiyin goalkeeper. Even at this stage of his career, Chhetri continues to show that he can make a meaningful contribution, proving that his influence is not limited to starting games.
Whether its from the first whistle or off the bench, his movement, hunger and instinct in front of goal still remain accurate.
Suresh Singh Wangjam – NA
Suresh came on in the 85th minute, replacing Iriondo, and had very little time to make a meaningful impact on the game
Chennaiyin FC Player Ratings (by Shyam Sundar)
Mohammad Nawaz – 5/10

Nawaz was called into action very early in the game, making a quick reflex save to keep Perovic’s header out. Even for Bengaluru’s first goal, Nawaz pulled off an outstanding save to deny Borja but was unlucky to see Ryan Williams score from the rebound.
However, he was completely at fault for the second goal, as he missed his punch and allowed Perovic to slot the ball into an empty net. He made a big save towards the end to deny Chhetri, but the game was already beyond Chennaiyin by then.
Namgyal Bhutia – 5/10
Although Namgyal looked more assured with his tackles and interceptions for much of the game with seven recoveries and a couple of interceptions, he was occasionally caught out by defensive lapses in concentration.
His failure to close down the space quickly enough for a shot led to Bengaluru’s first goal, as he failed to commit to a block to deny Borja’s attempt.
He almost made another costly mistake, which could have resulted in a goal had Nuno Reis not made a last-ditch tackle.
Emmanuel Imanishimwe – 5/10
After an impressive performance in the opening game, Emmanuel had an off day against Bengaluru FC and was at fault for one of the goals. He was booked for a rash challenge on Perovic in the first half and was caught out of position for the first goal, having to move towards the left-back position after Saheef was caught out of position.
He was directly at fault for the second goal, too, as he completely missed his header while seemingly expecting Nawaz to punch the ball. Both players ended up fumbling.

Nuno Reis – 6/10
Nuno was arguably Chennaiyin FC’s best defender in this clash, looking assured and up to the mark at the back. He won several duels against Perovic, made eight ball recoveries and produced a few crucial interceptions and blocks.
However, he once again played a poor backpass that nearly resulted in a goal, much like in the game against FC Goa, when Perovic chipped the ball just over Nawaz’s goal.
Muhammed Saheef – 5.5/10
Saheef was directly at fault for the first goal, as he was caught out of position during a quick transition, leaving acres of space for Perovic to exploit down the left flank and play a dangerous cross across the face of the goal.
He had little impact in attack and was almost caught out of position again, nearly allowing Soham to score.
Hriata Chawngthu – 7/10
A solid performance from the former Jamshedpur FC youngster in the middle of the park. He won his duels, made seven ball recoveries and recorded one tackle.
He also completed 90% of his passes, was dispossessed just once in the first half and was not dribbled past despite facing Ryan Williams. Overall, he had a decent outing in midfield alongside Ayush for the Marina Machans.
Ayush Chhetri – 6.5/10
While Hriata impressed with his defensive work and passing, Ayush was crucial in progressing the ball through midfield and getting it to Talal.
He completed 90% of his passes, with more than 70% of them coming in the final third. He also made three key passes, won four duels, recorded five ball recoveries and made three interceptions.
Madih Talal – 7/10

It was clear that Talal was not at his best, but he still created plenty for his side in the final third through his movement and one-touch passing. He completed two dribbles, won three ground duels, made two ball recoveries and created a couple of chances in attack.
One would hope his performances improve as he gains match fitness and gets more accustomed to how Clifford Miranda wants to set up his side.
Irfan Yadwad – 6/10
Game after game, Irfan is being deployed on the wings by Clifford Miranda, where he is usually not at his best. However, he was much better this time around than in the opening game against FC Goa.
He made a couple of key runs, delivered a few dangerous crosses and linked up well with Madih Talal on several occasions.
However, the Marina Machans’ attacking structure still lacked the contribution a natural winger could provide. He also came close to getting Shivaldo sent off, winning two crucial fouls in dangerous areas.
Prakadeswaran – 7.5/10
Prakadeswaran started on the right wing before switching to the left after the first-half water break. He was positive in his approach, consistently looking to take on defenders and deliver dangerous crosses into the box.
He came close to scoring in the second half after getting past Ricky and firing a shot on goal, but Gurpreet made the save. It was surprising to see Clifford take Prakadeswaran off before Irfan.
Ramon Tanque – 6/10
Ramon’s overall performance was decent, as he made several runs into space to get on the ball and link up with his teammates. However, he failed to find a clear goalscoring opportunity inside the box or create one for himself.
With his movement and tendency to drift out wide, Chennaiyin lacked a focal point in attack for much of the game.
Substitutes
Bryce Miranda – 6/10
Just as in the previous game, Chennaiyin looked much more structured in attack as soon as Bryce came on. He delivered several dangerous crosses into the box and made progressive runs down the left, but there was nobody inside the box to meet his deliveries.
Brison Fernandes – 6/10
Brison was straight into the action after coming on, testing Gurpreet with a low left-footed attempt across the face of goal.
However, his impact was minimal after he was moved to the right wing. He managed just one more shot in stoppage time, which Gurpreet routinely saved.
Dinpuia – 6/10
Dinpuia came on for Bhutia at right-back and had a decent game against Ashique Kuruniyan. He was not heavily tested as Bengaluru focused more on protecting their lead, but he still made two ball recoveries and an interception.
Jiteshwor Singh – 6/10
Jiteshwor made an immediate impact, winning the ball back in midfield before firing a shot straight at Gurpreet.
It was good to see him getting minutes once again.
Shubham Rawat – 6/10
Rawat had little time to make an impact on the game and did not get any goalscoring opportunities. He was also unable to create a chance for his teammates.
