The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda, Goa, gears up to host the fourth game of the second matchweek of the Indian Super League 2026-27 season, where home team Churchill Brothers are all set to take on reigning champions of India, East Bengal in what is set to be a thrilling contest between the two teams. The match will be played on 18th October 2026, Sunday at 5:00 PM IST.

Much to everyone’s surprise, the Red Machines got the better of the Islanders 2-1 after a win over Mumbai City FC. Gaurav Bora scored the opener for Churchill, followed by a late strike from Sebastian Gutierrez. Dimtrou’s boys were brilliant in the last game and will be hoping to clinch another home win.

The Red and Gold Brigade will kick off the new season after taking on Al Shorta in the AFC Champions League 2 fixture. Their title defence begins in Goa, and Habas will be keen to go all guns blazing and win the first game of the season against the debutants.

This is set to be an electrifying contest between two sides, and the individual player battles will determine the fate of the game. In this article, we take a closer look at the key player battles to keep an eye on in Churchill Brothers vs East Bengal FC.

3. Mohammed Rashid vs Melroy Assisi

The Captain for the Red & Gold scored in their most recent AFC Champions League 2 match vs Al-Shorta.

The Palestinian midfielder is coming after scoring against Al Shorta in the AFC Champions League 2 clash. He operates as a central or defensive midfielder, but is often seen initiating attacking phases. He has great vision and is a key creator from deep or set-piece situations.

Assisi is a physically imposing, robust centre-back who had a brilliant game against the Islanders in the last match. Assisi struggles when pulled out of position into wider areas, and Rashid’s ability to switch the angle of attack and thread progressive passes gives him a slight advantage in this battle.

2. Vincy Barretto vs Hardik Bhatt

The sprint machine for the Red Machine was in top-notch form for Dimitrou’s team against the Islanders. Barretto’s ability to trigger immediate and vertical transitions makes him a real threat for the Red and Gold Brigade. He was also seen shooting and giving dangerous crosses to Lekay.

Bhatt, on the other hand, is highly reliable in structured defensive setups. He provides great balance on East Bengal’s right flank, and it will be interesting to see if Bhatt can match Barretto’s elite pace in the wings. He was also involved in both of East Bengal’s goals against Al-Shorta in their AFC Champions League 2 game.

1. Sebastian Gutierrez vs Jay Gupta

Sebastian Gutierrez scored against Mumbai City FC in Churchill’s first ever ISL match.

The Colombian found his name on the scoresheet in the last game against Manolo Marquez’s side. He is one of the most tactically sound and intelligent players in the ISL and excels at operating between the lines. He also has an eye for goal and will actively drift into zones between East Bengal’s midfield and defensive lines.

Jay, on the other hand, will be technically inferior to the Colombian in the space vs physicality battle. Gupta is naturally attacking-minded and occasionally deployed higher up as a wing-back, which often leaves too much space for Sebastian to exploit on the flanks.

When will Churchill Brothers FC face against East Bengal FC?

East Bengal FC will start their 2026-27 ISL campaign away from home against Churchill Brothers FC, at the Fatorda Stadium in Goa on 18th October 2026, Sunday at 5:00 PM IST.

What was the result of Churchill Brothers FC’s most match?

Churchill Brothers FC head into this match after defeating Mumbai City FC 2-1 in their first ever Indian Super League (ISL) match.
