Churchill Brothers 0-2 NorthEast United FC: Key takeaways from ISL 2026-27 clash

Highlanders punish Churchill’s mistakes as Luwang missed a late chance to equalize.

In their Indian Super League 2026-27 match At the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda, home team Churchill Brothers had the chances, while visitors, NorthEast United had the answers.

The Highlanders did what unbeaten sides do, they took the moments that came their way and let their opponents’ mistakes do the rest. A 2-0 win, sealed in stoppage time, leaves the debutants with a familiar story of promising play and empty hands.

As a result of the game, NorthEast United FC continue their unbeaten streak, adding another win in the process. On the other hand, Chuchill Brothers are yet to win another game since their opener against Mumbai City FC on 11th October.

Clinical Finishing from the Highlanders

Ethyan Gonzalez scored against Churchill Brothers in the 16th minute of the game.

The decisive moment came from a small error. In the 17th minute, Churchill Brothers captain Kingslee Fernandes misplaced a pass and Alaaeddine Ajaraie pounced. The Highlanders worked the ball to Jithin on the right, who dragged his cross to the left side of the box.

Ethyan González was waiting and finished with a composure that left keeper Kadir no chance. The celebration mattered as much as the finish. Ethyan pointed skyward, dedicating the goal to the late Jesús de Miguel. It was a quiet moment of tribute in a heated game.

Churchill’s response was where the night turned. In the 88th minute, Wayde Lekay struck a fierce shot that Gurmeet Singh could only parry into a dangerous area. Luwang had the rebound and the goal at his mercy, but his first touch let him down.

Moments later, Abdul Rabeeh broke clear and delivered an inviting cross for Antonio Moyano to finish the game 0-2, in the 93rd minute.

Churchill’s final-third indecision

Churchill Brothers failed to score on multiple occasions during the match.

On territory and intent, Churchill had little to be ashamed of. They pushed forward after the restart, but the final ball kept letting them down.

Sebastián Gutiérrez was involved in most of their best moments. He beat Pramveer with sharp footwork in the box in the 11th minute but had his penalty appeal waved away. In the 6th minute of the game, he failed to punish Gurmeet’s slow touch after Lekay won the ball near the NorthEast goal.

His long-range effort at 56′ lacked the power to trouble the keeper. At 51′, Lekay’s heavy touch wasted a neat Anil Gaonkar pass and Gutiérrez cross. The defensive picture is just as concerning. The Red Machines have now gone four matches without a clean sheet, and after beating Mumbai City 2-1 on opening night, they have lost three in a row, conceding 4 to East Bengal, 3 to Punjab FC and now 2 here.

Three points from four games is a poor return for a side that has shown real attacking quality. Their problem is not a lack of ideas but a lack of ruthlessness at both ends.

The Highlanders’ game management & defensive spine

NorthEast United now have 3 clean sheets from 5 ISL games.

NorthEast were not flawless, as Gurmeet’s touch in the 6th minute of the game nearly gifted Churchill an early lead. But what stood out was how the Highlanders recovered from that error and the nervy spells that followed.

They had been burned late by Bengaluru FC, who equalised in the closing minutes after NorthEast led 1-0. This time they held shape under sustained Churchill pressure from the 79th minute, refusing to give the hosts space in the final third. Benali’s side defended in a compact unit & didn’t panic when the match got stretched.

Gurmeet’s redemption came in the 88th minute. After his early wobble, the keeper got down to stop Lekay’s effort, and the parry mattered even though the rebound fell badly for Churchill. A goalkeeper who makes the one decisive save in a tight game earns the trust of his back line.
