Churchill Brothers 0-4 East Bengal: Key takeaways from ISL 2026-27 match

The Torchbearers start their ISL 2026-27 campaign in style.

East Bengal were able to begin their 2026-27 Indian Super League (ISL) campaign in dominant fashion with a 0-4 thrashing of Churchill Brothers at the Fatorda Stadium, Goa, on Sunday (18 October 2026). The Torchbearers began their title defence in blistering fashion with a goal in the second minute itself through Dani Ramirez.

They were able to double the lead through Edmund Lalrindika towards the end of the first half. After that, substitute Bipin Singh scored a brace in the last five minutes of the match to cap off a dominant display from the defending champions against the Goan side.

There was quite a major gulf in quality between the two sides that was noticed in this game, with East Bengal being in cruise control for the majority of it and showing how well they can play when high on confidence.

Here, we look at some of the interesting talking points based on aspects learnt about both teams from this result.

Dani Ramirez thrives in a free number 10 role

Dani Ramirez opened the scoring for East Bengal against Churchill Brothers.

Dani Ramirez was brought on board at East Bengal in the 2026 summer window so that he could fill the void left by Miguel Figueira seamlessly.

Ramirez had already produced impressive performances in cup competitions and the AFC Champions League Two matches for the Torchbearers, but he marked his ISL debut for East Bengal in style.

He only needed two minutes before scoring a superb free-kick from close range, proving himself capable of scoring from a variety of occasions.

Ramirez played a key role in ensuring that his side dominated proceedings, creating two major chances and also completing well over 50 passes.

He remains a player who will be at the heart of East Bengal’s attacking chances, be it creating or converting them directly or at least playing teammates in free spaces to outwit opposition players.

Based on the kind of ISL debut that Ramirez had, it’s clear that he can replicate Miguel Figueira’s heroics from last season with ease.

Inexperienced backline is a concern for Churchill Brothers

Churchill Brothers conceded 4 goals against East Bengal.

After having defeated Mumbai City FC in their first-ever ISL game, Churchill Brothers were given a major reality check in their clash against East Bengal.

Dimitris Dimitriou took a risk by playing an all-Indian backline, which is definitely a major risk for any side to take in ISL matches. Well, East Bengal were able to make them pay for that, scoring two goals to take a major advantage in the first half.

Churchill Brothers were also not able to hold their own against the Torchbearers’ fast breaks and attacking transitions, with their defenders’ poor positioning allowing Bipin Singh to score the late goals in the match. Churchill Brothers have quite a few inexperienced defenders at their helm, which can be their Achilles’ heel when it comes to trying to consistently win matches.

Indian players shine for East Bengal FC

Edmund and Bipin were the Indian goalscorers for East Bengal against Churchill Brothers.

Antonio Habas opted to start with only three foreign players for East Bengal in the Churchill Brothers clash, one of whom was a centre-back! Indeed, both their foreign strikers, Arnaud Loba and Lukasz Zwolinski, were on the bench, with Habas instead going with a front three of Rohit Danu, Edmund Lalrindika, as well as David Lalhlansanga.

Well, his faith in his young Indian forwards was definitely justified as they were able to link up beautifully to torment the Churchill Brothers’ backline.

David and Edmund combined beautifully for the second goal, while the interchanging and fast movement on the attacking transitions from the Indian forwards kept a veil of unpredictability around them.

In the second half, East Bengal substitutes Bipin Singh and PV Vishnu proved that they can be major attacking assets – with the former scoring a brace and the latter getting an assist. This East Bengal side isn’t going to be one that is super reliant on their foreign attacking assets for goals.

They have many Indian players who can take up the responsibilities with ease and bring something different to their attacking structure as well.

Squad depth can play decisive role in East Bengal’s charge to retain ISL title

East Bengal have a very good overall squad depth.

East Bengal were definitely able to make a statement of intent with their huge 0-4 thrashing of Churchill Brothers in their 2026-27 ISL opener. They also proved that their squad depth is one that many ISL teams will be extremely envious of.

Habas is fortunate to have multiple reliable and quality players in almost every single position in his XI – which also includes multiple goal-scoring outlets for the forward roles.

The fact that East Bengal could bring on experienced and unpredictable attacking threats like Bipin, Vishnu and Ake Loba (who got an assist) – while also having proactive options like David and Edmund is proof of how good their recruitment has been in recent years.

Now, the defending ISL champions have a squad packed with match-winners and reliable players – who have the character and ability to help them make a strong charge for the ISL title once again.
