Inter Kashi FC vs Kerala Blasters: Three key player battles to watch out for

Inter Kashi FC will face Kerala Blasters FC in the opening match on Day 2 of the 2026-27 ISL season.

Inter Kashi FC and Kerala Blasters FC meet in Match 3 of the 13th season of Indian Super League (ISL 2026-27) at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, Balewadi, Pune, with kickoff at 05:00 PM on 11 October.

It is hard to find two clubs more reshaped by the offseason. Inter Kashi and Kerala Blasters have both undergone a complete squad overhaul and a change in investors, and the game is at Balewadi Stadium, Pune, hosting an ISL match for the first time in seven years.

Inter Kashi FC’s story is the more precarious one. Their entry into the league was confirmed late, with transfer bans and investor uncertainty hanging over them. Carlos Vaz Pinto has had little time to build chemistry. Their squad graphic lists just three midfielders. That is a thin spine for a first ISL game against a side with a clear creative edge.

Kerala Blasters FC rebuilt arrived late but with a clear idea of who they are. Ashley Westwood took over from David Català after a dismal start and steadied the ship, lifting the club out of danger with 29 points from 24 matches. His first full pre-season has produced four new foreign signings and one retained face, Adrian Luna and re-signing Fallou Ndiaye.

With little shared history on either side, structure will count for less than individual quality. Here are three duels which carry that weight.

Adrian Luna vs Jitendra Singh

Westwood is expected to line up in a 4-3-3. Luna is expected to be the creative hub in front of the defence. His job is to receive between the lines, turn, and release runners. Jitendra Singh, one of only three midfielders on Inter Kashi’s list, is likely to be asked to stay tight to him.a, with players like Nebojsa Kosovic, Ebind. Inter Kashi’s poster lists only three midfielders, so whoever starts in the middle is carrying a heavy load. If a foreign midfielder is still to be revealed, the picture changes.

Luna’s weapon is his brain. He finds half-yards, reads where the second ball will fall and takes set pieces with real quality. His weakness is the legs of a veteran. In a high-tempo, transition-heavy game, he can be hustled. Jitendra’s edge, if he plays the disruptive role, is energy and physicality. His risk is discipline. Chase Luna too hard and he drags his own shape open, and Luna thrives on that.

With such a thin midfield, Inter Kashi have no one to cover for a mistake. If Jitendra wins the early physical exchanges and forces Luna sideways, Blasters’ attack loses its pulse. If Luna drifts free, Inter Kashi’s back line spends 90 minutes facing the ball.

Andre Green vs Laldinliana Renthlei

Inter Kashi signed Laldinliana Renthlei from Chennaiyin FC

Green is the Blasters’ marquee new winger. He came through Aston Villa’s academy and has Premier League experience with Villa. He is young and has 187 league appearances with 27 goals and 12 assists. That record points to a wide player who creates, not a pure finisher. Renthlei is an experienced defender, and if he starts on Green’s flank, he faces a direct, technical one-on-one.

Green brings European-level technique and an understanding of when to carry the ball and when to release it. The unknown is how quickly he adjusts to ISL conditions: heat, pitch quality, and the physical way Indian defenders close down wingers. Renthlei’s job is to stay on his feet, make Green choose a side and not get beaten by a first-touch turn. Without a clear gap in individual quality, this comes down to concentration and positioning over 90 minutes.

If Green is isolated against a well-drilled full-back, the Blasters’ main new attacking outlet becomes a spectator. If he gets in behind, Inter Kashi will be pulling their centre-backs wide, and Luna will feast on the space it creates. One flank may shape the Blasters’ whole attacking pattern.

James Bolton vs Sumeet Passi

ISL 2026-27: Kerala Blasters FC complete signing of James Bolton

Bolton is the Blasters’ new centre-back. He’s 32, English, has 413 career appearances including four for England C, and arrived on a free transfer. Passi leads the Inter Kashi forward line, and they’ll want direct balls, second balls and set pieces to stress a centre-back who is still learning his partners.

Bolton’s value is experience: positioning, reading danger early, organising those around him. His risk is that he hasn’t played with his defensive partners, and a centre-back’s best asset is understanding the player beside him. Passi’s value is movement and persistence, and the way to expose a new defence is to run at the gaps between its players, because a defender who hasn’t yet learned his team-mates’ habits will hesitate there.

Bolton doesn’t need to win every header or tackle. He needs to keep Inter Kashi’s forwards from finding rhythm and keep the communication with his goalkeeper and full-backs clean. One mix-up, one half-second of hesitation, and Passi could punish it.
