The rivalry has produced several memorable encounters over the years, ranging from controversial refereeing decisions and emphatic victories to heated contests and decisive goals.

Diego Forlan scored a hat-trick against Kerala Blasters for Mumbai City FC in the 2016 season.

During the first three seasons of the ISL, between 2014 and 2016, Mumbai City FC won two of their six encounters against Kerala Blasters. Kerala managed just one victory during this period, while the remaining three matches ended in draws.

One of the standout results from this period came in 2016, when Mumbai City FC produced a sensational performance to thrash Kerala Blasters 5-0 at their home. Legendary striker Diego Forlan stole the show with a hat-trick, handing the Islanders one of their most memorable victories over the Blasters and in the club’s history.

The rivalry also witnessed controversy in the 2017-18 season, when Kerala Blasters secured a 1-0 victory at the Mumbai Football Arena. A quickly taken free-kick led to Ian Hume scoring the only goal of the game, amid controversy surrounding an offside decision.

Mumbai, however, responded emphatically in the following season. In 2018-19, the Islanders demolished Kerala 6-1 at the Mumbai Football Arena. Modou Sougou produced a sensational performance, scoring four goals in a remarkable individual display. The heavy defeat also proved to be a turning point for Kerala, with manager David James subsequently being sacked.

The Islanders continued their success against the Blasters in the 2019-20 season, securing a 1-0 away victory. Amrinder Singh was instrumental in the win, producing a series of spectacular saves to keep Kerala at bay. Interestingly, the former Mumbai goalkeeper now represents Kerala Blasters.

Mumbai City completed the double in 2020-21 before Kerala responded the following season

Mumbai City FC completed the league double over Kerala Blasters in the 2020-21 season, underlining their dominance in the fixture during their title-winning campaign.

Kerala, however, turned the tables in 2021-22, completing a double of their own against the Islanders, as they eventually finished runners up. Mumbai regained the upper hand in 2022-23, once again winning both league encounters against the Kochi-based side.

The 2023-24 season produced two particularly heated meetings. Mumbai City FC won the home fixture 2-1 in a high-tempered contest at the Mumbai Football Arena, with both teams seeing players sent off. Kerala responded in the reverse fixture, defeating Mumbai 2-0 in another hostile encounter in a packed Kaloor stadium.

Kerala Blasters won 8-0 against the Mumbai City FC reserves during the 2024 Durand Cup.

While Mumbai have enjoyed the better record in the ISL, Kerala Blasters recorded a large victory over Mumbai City FC Reserves in the 2024 Durand Cup. Kerala won the match 8-0, registering their biggest victory in any competition.

However, the result came against Mumbai’s reserve side rather than their senior team, making it distinct from the clubs’ senior-team head-to-head record. Nevertheless, the result remains a memorable chapter in the broader history between the two clubs.

Mumbai City edged Kerala in their last two meetings

Mumbai City FC got the better of Kerala Blasters in the Super Cup last season, winning 1-0 to dent the latter’s hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages.

The Islanders also emerged victorious in the teams’ most recent meeting, which took place in Kerala during the shortened 2025-26 ISL season. A solitary goal from Lallianzuala Chhangte proved decisive as Mumbai secured another 1-0 win over the Blasters.

Mumbai will now look to extend their recent winning run against Kerala, while the hosts will be keen to end that sequence and get their campaign back on track. With both sides coming into Sunday’s fixture on the back of defeats, the encounter presents an opportunity for either team to regain momentum.

Sunday’s encounter will be Kerala Blasters’ first home game of the season, with a packed and vocal crowd expected at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi. Backed by renewed optimism following the arrival of new investors and the fans’ hopes of finally winning silverware, the Blasters will be determined to make their home advantage count.

Manolo Marquez’s Mumbai City FC, meanwhile, will face a stern test in a hostile atmosphere, particularly after suffering a few injury concerns in their previous outing. The Islanders will need their experienced players and leaders to step up if they are to overcome the challenge and extend their historic dominance over Kerala.
