Kerala Blasters vs Mumbai City:  Key player battles to watch out for

The Blasters gear up to play the Islanders for the 26th time in their history.

Mumbai City FC will play their next 2026-27 Indian Super League (ISL) match away from home at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi, to face Kerala Blasters FC, on Sunday, 25th October 2026.

Kerala Blasters FC arrive at this fixture carrying the wreckage of a 4-1 defeat at NorthEast United, a game that exposed two flaws at once. Defensively, the shape came apart the moment the ball was turned over. Offensively, the transitions that Ashley Westwood’s side are built to exploit were wasted by hesitant final balls and poor spacing between the runners.

Mumbai City FC, under Manolo Márquez, have the opposite kind of problem. They are still bedding in after sweeping summer changes, but their principles are fixed, stretch the pitch horizontally, overload the centre, and probe the half-spaces until a lane opens.

So the contrast is structural. Westwood wants chaos in the second phase, while Márquez wants control in the first. Kochi, with its noise and compression of tempo, will push the game towards Westwood’s version. The question is whether Kerala’s individuals can convert that pressure into something coherent. Three duels will answer it.

Here are three key player battles that will play an important part in determining the outcome of Kerala Blasters FC vs Mumbai City FC.

Momo Yansané vs Carlos Delgado

Kerala Blasters vs Mumbai City:  Key player battles to watch out for
Momo Yansané scored his first ISL goal for Kerala Blasters FC against NorthEast United FC.

Carlos Delgado is the defensive reference point Mumbai City have lacked in their settling-in period. He is a veteran of Odisha FC, comfortable with physical confrontation, and likes to engage a striker early and make the duel a contest of bodies. Against most forwards that is an advantage. Against Momo Yansané it is a wager.

Yansané does not want the duel that Delgado wants. His threat comes from darting off the shoulder, starting from the blind side of the centre-back and attacking the space behind rather than the ball at his feet. A defender who steps up to engage him is exposed by that movement, and one who drops to protect the space concedes the platform for Kerala’s direct service.

Delgado’s strength, the willingness to step out and confront, is precisely what Yansané’s movement is designed to punish. The danger multiplies once Lazar Ćirković is involved. Delgado and Ćirković have not had the repetitions together that make step-and-cover automatic. Yansané does not need to score to damage Mumbai City, he only needs to make the entire defensive line hesitate to move out of position.

Adrián Luna vs Sergio Llamas

Kerala Blasters vs Mumbai City:  Key player battles to watch out for
Sergio Llamas scored for Mumbai City in their first match of the 2026-27 ISL season vs Churchill Brothers FC.

The central question of the match sits in the pockets. Adrián Luna’s habit is to drift into the half-spaces and receive on the half-turn, with his body already open to play forward. He is hard to mark because he does not occupy a fixed position. He appears between the opposition midfield and defence, forcing a decision about who picks him up.

Sergio Llamas is the man who has to make that decision, and he makes it alone. As the solitary controller at the base of Mumbai City’s midfield, his spatial discipline is the foundation of their structure. Mumbai have no like-for-like profile for him, so there is no equivalent player to step in if he is pulled out of position. That makes this the most exposed point in their system.

The dilemma runs both ways, If Luna lures Llamas into stepping out early, Llamas leaves the zone in front of the centre-backs empty, and Mumbai City’s central defenders are left defending between the lines against a runner arriving from deep.

A single line-breaking pass through that gap can turn a controlled phase into a transition against a back line facing its own goal. If Llamas holds his position and denies Luna the half-turn, he protects the defence but cuts off the supply line on which Kerala’s transitional play depends. Without Luna’s link, Westwood’s verticality becomes long and disconnected.

Llamas does not need to win every exchange. He needs to be right often enough, and Mumbai’s possession can also reduce how often he is tested. If Márquez’s side hold the ball for long spells, Luna touches it less. Kerala’s plan depends on turning the match into a scrap around the second ball, where Luna’s pockets exist. If Mumbai control the first phase, he is starved.

Mohammed Sanan vs Akash Mishra

Kerala Blasters vs Mumbai City:  Key player battles to watch out for
Akash Mishra has led Mumbai City during both of their 2026-27 ISL games so far.

On the flank, the contrast is between acceleration and orientation. Mohammed Sanan is at his best when the ball arrives in stride and the channel opens in front of him. He prefers directness to dribbling combinations, and a recovery run that starts a yard late is his invitation.

Akash Mishra’s value is recovery speed and body shape. He defends facing the ball and the touchline, closing angles rather than committing. But Mumbai’s possession phases ask full-backs to push high to support the horizontal stretch, and that leaves the wide channel behind them as the thing Kerala can attack.

When Mishra is caught high, he must recover backwards, turning his body away from the play and sprinting with the runner on his outside. That is a different and weaker defensive posture than the one he prefers. Mumbai’s structure when they have the ball will determine how many players remain behind the ball to cover Mishra’s absence.

The danger compounds with overlapping runs, if Sanan holds Mishra’s attention and a Kerala full-back overlaps, Mishra faces a 2v1 that forces a choice, follow the runner and release Sanan, or hold and let the cross come in.

The cutback or early delivery then feeds Yansané arriving across Delgado, which connects this duel back to the first. The three matchups are one system. Yansané stresses the centre-backs, Sanan stresses the flank, and Luna decides whether they are ever supplied.
