Mohun Bagan SG 1-0 Chennaiyin FC: Key Takeaways from ISL 2026-27 match
Chennaiyin FC had 25 shots against Mohun Bagan SG away from home.
On a calm, breezy night at the Salt Lake Stadium, two former champions of the Indian Super League (ISL) went head-to-head in their third game of the 2026/27 season, as 2026 IFA Shield champions Mohun Bagan SG hosted a winless Chennaiyin FC at their home ground in Kolkata.
Given the teams’ form and the quality each side possesses, Mohun Bagan were expected to have the upper hand and ease past Chennaiyin FC with a win in their first home game of the season. However, the Marina Machans put on a brave display and fought determinedly to secure a positive result before their run of three consecutive home games.
Chennaiyin FC dominated possession, registered more shots and dictated the tempo for large parts of the game, arguably even outplaying Mohun Bagan at their fortress. However, all their efforts came to nothing as Clifford Miranda’s side failed to capitalize in the final third and conceded in the 85th minute to lose all three points.
While the performance was scrappy, Mohun Bagan got all three points on the night, which matters most in the broader context of the league table. Chennaiyin, meanwhile, were impressive and arguably the better team on the pitch, but that counted for nothing as they extended their winless run to eight games.
Here are our key takeaways from a cagey encounter at Salt Lake Stadium that could have produced a completely different result on another day.
It was not Clifford Miranda’s fault this time
Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere

With just two wins in 19 games, it is understandable that Clifford Miranda would usually face criticism for another defeat. However, against quality opposition in Mohun Bagan SG, the Indian head coach got his tactics and structural setup absolutely spot on.
His side enjoyed a significant share of possession, pressed the Mariners high up the pitch to win the ball back, progressed the ball quickly from the defensive third to the final third to exploit spaces in transition, and created numerous opportunities in attack.
One could argue that if the football gods had been on their side, or if Chennaiyin’s attackers had made better decisions in the final third, they would have scored at least once, given the quality of the chances they created.
One possible criticism of Miranda would be his decision to let Namgyal Bhutia continue despite the player suffering from cramps a couple of minutes before the goal. Had Dippendu come on at that moment, perhaps Liston would not have had the space to deliver the cross towards the far post for Mandar Singh.
Panagiotis Dilmperis must stop his experiments

Panagiotis Dilmperis was the first to acknowledge that his side had disappointed the fans with their performance. He admitted that his decision to deploy a 4-4-2 formation had backfired in the first half, when Chennaiyin had acres of space in midfield and dictated the tempo with relative ease.
His decision not to start Thapa in Apuia’s absence diminished the fluidity Mohun Bagan usually enjoy in the middle of the park, with Samir Zeljkovic unable to provide the same impact alongside Deepak Tangri. Meanwhile, overlooking Sahal and not starting him in Miguel’s absence meant the team lacked a creative edge in the final third.
These shortcomings were addressed almost immediately when Thapa and Sahal entered the pitch. Mohun Bagan suddenly gained a grip on midfield, began creating more meaningful chances, dictated the tempo and reduced the spaces available to Chennaiyin.
Talal and Stojanovic are crucial to Chennaiyin’s style of play

Although Chennaiyin enjoyed a reasonable share of possession in their opening two games against FC Goa and Bengaluru FC, something was missing in their ball progression and chance creation in the final third. Nikola started the first game and Madih Talal the second, but the team still failed to click in attack.
However, when Clifford Miranda played Nikola and Madih Talal together in midfield, Chennaiyin looked like a completely different side in terms of ball progression, ball retention and chance creation. The duo combined well with Ayush Chhetri in the middle of the park, with both players creating more than five key chances.
While Nikola maintained a passing accuracy of 80%, Talal recorded an impressive 91%, even in the final third, despite attempting numerous crosses and taking risks with his passes.
Defensive concerns continue for Mohun Bagan

Mohun Bagan are usually known for their strong backline and ability to keep clean sheets, but they have struggled defensively in their last two games this season. In fact, Chennaiyin FC repeatedly exposed their weaknesses with the number of chances they created and, more importantly, the ease with which they did so, often encountering little resistance from the opposition defenders.
Vishal Kaith was the standout performer for the Mariners, making several solid saves to deny Chennaiyin. However, despite keeping a clean sheet, Panagiotis Dilmperis will be concerned about the way Chennaiyin’s players repeatedly ran in behind his defensive line, won balls played into open spaces and turned them into dangerous crosses or opportunities through the middle.
Most concerning of all was allowing one of the league’s lowest-scoring teams to register 25 shots at home, in front of their own fans. That is unacceptable, regardless of the final result.
The same pattern was evident against Sporting Club Delhi, when Hnamte made a similar run behind the defensive line to give his side the lead. Delhi also created several opportunities in quick transitions but, like Chennaiyin, lacked the cutting edge in the final third to punish the Mariners.
With Rahul Bheke, a lack of pace in the heart of the defense is an obvious concern. Dilmperis brought on Subhashish Bose to try him in that role, potentially as a solution to this issue. However, a more structured approach would be to deploy Bose at left-back and Abhishek at right-back, with Mehtab as a center-back, or retain the current structure and simply replace Bheke with Alex Saji.
Ramon Tanque must start scoring goals

Ramon Tanque, the Brazilian striker, signed to address Chennaiyin FC’s goalscoring problems that were evident last season, has yet to prove that he can be the answer to those issues. That is a fair assessment that any Chennaiyin fan would acknowledge.
His commitment, work rate, link-up play, runs into spaces and ability to create chances deserve plenty of praise across the opening three games. However, as a striker, he must score goals. He also needs to spend more time inside the box to present himself as a genuine option for teammates looking to deliver crosses or play through balls when they find space in dangerous areas.
Against Mohun Bagan, he had a great opportunity to score an equalizer for Chennaiyin in the 96th minute. The chance was set up perfectly inside the six-yard box, but the Brazilian attempted a volley and struck the ball awkwardly, sending it high and wide.
For a side that has scored just 10 goals in its last 16 games and has failed to score more than once in a single game since the start of last season, Ramon Tanque must take greater responsibility and start scoring more consistently to inspire the team to more wins.
