Punjab FC vs Odisha FC: Three key player battles to watch out for
The Shers were eliminated in the semi-finals of the 2026 IFA Shield.
Punjab FC, who were in the title race until the final game of the 2025-26 Indian Super League (ISL) season, return to action in the 2026-27 campaign with a home game against Odisha FC, who are in a much stronger position heading into the new season than they were last year.
Both sides have made several key changes to their squads ahead of the new campaign. The Shers were forced to make a change at the top, appointing Pavlos Dermitzakis to replace Panagiotis Dilmperis, who left the club to join Mohun Bagan.
Punjab FC have also completely overhauled their foreign contingent, bringing in two players with ISL experience. Pramveer remains their biggest departure among the Indian players, while a couple of promising youngsters have been promoted to the senior team.
On the other hand, Odisha FC have retained head coach TG Purushothaman, who, alongside Joy Gabriel, has overseen an impressive squad rebuild, at least on paper. Several domestic players with ISL experience have joined the Odisha project, including VP Suhair, Ritwik Das, Imran Khan and Sachin Suresh.
The club have also signed five new foreigners after playing the entirety of last season with only Carlos Delgado.
With both teams preparing mentally and physically for this clash, letβs take a look at the three key battles that could have a major say in the outcome of the game.
Ricky Shabong vs Puitea
Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere

One of the most intriguing and intense battles of the game is expected to take place in the middle of the park, where two pocket-dynamo midfielders, Ricky Shabong and Puitea, will go head-to-head.
Both have been among the most consistent midfielders in the ISL over the last two seasons, with one earning a national team call-up while the other waits for his opportunity. Their performances will play a crucial role in dictating the pace and rhythm of the game.
Ricky is a workhorse in midfield, clinical with his passing and at his best when breaking down opposition plays through crucial interceptions and recoveries. Puitea, on the other hand, excels at carrying the ball, playing progressive passes and creating chances through the middle and from set-pieces.
Rahul KP vs Muhammad Uvais

The battle between these two Malayali players on the right flank is expected to have a significant influence on the game, especially with Odisha FC boasting a brilliant striker in Everton, who thrives on crosses into the box. Uvais is a strong defender who is likely to have the upper hand against Rahul KP in terms of physicality and aerial ability.
However, Rahulβs low centre of gravity and pace make him an intriguing threat. He will look to exploit even the slightest space on the wings, using his speed to get past Uvais, whose pace may not match Rahulβs.
Rahul KP is coming off a season in which he will feel he could have done much better, having scored just two goals, both in the same game. He will be eager to improve his goal-scoring numbers this season and will be hoping to get off the mark in the opening game against Punjab FC.
Messi Bouli vs Stephen Eze

Two players who played crucial roles in pushing Jamshedpur FC into the 2025-26 ISL Shield race under Owen Coyle last season will now face each other inside the box. Having been teammates, they would have faced each other numerous times in training and will know each otherβs strengths and weaknesses well.
Messi Bouli comes into this game in excellent spirits after scoring a hat-trick and registering two assists in his first-ever appearance for Punjab FC in a 7-0 win over Calcutta Customs FC. His key strengths are his physicality and hold-up play, allowing him to outmuscle several ISL defenders, win difficult duels and bring his fellow attackers into play.
However, if there is one defender who could make that difficult for him, it is Stephen Eze. The Nigerian centre-back has been regarded by many as one of the best defenders in the ISL since making his debut for Jamshedpur FC in the 2020-21 season.
He is an absolute rock at the back, known for his resolute tackles and crucial blocks. His threat from set-pieces cannot be discounted either.
Who is the head coach of Punjab FC?
Following Panagiotis Dilmperisβ departure, Punjab FC have appointed Greek tactician Pavlos Dermitzakis as the head coach.
When is the Punjab FC vs Odisha FC match scheduled?
