Eneko Satrústegui joins the Highlanders on a one-year deal

NorthEast United FC have officially completed the signing of Spanish centre-back Eneko Satrústegui Plano on a one-year deal. The Spaniard becomes the fourth foreigner in NorthEast United’s squad alongside Alaaeddine Ajaraie, Ethyan Gonzalez and Antonio Moyano.

Born on 25 September 1990 in Villava, Navarre, the 35-year-old left-footed defender joins the Highlanders following the expiry of his contract with Spanish second-division side Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa.

A solid defender joins NorthEast United

A product of CA Osasuna, Satrústegui’s introduction to top-flight football could hardly have been more unforgiving. His La Liga debut came at the Santiago Bernabéu against Real Madrid, ending in a red card.

His next league start ended the same way. Two appearances. Two dismissals. The kind of beginning that has ended many promising careers before they truly started. For Eneko, it became the first chapter of a journey defined by resilience.

Across the next decade, Satrústegui carved out a career the hard way, earning every appearance through consistency, discipline, and commitment to defending. From Numancia to Murcia, Ebro to Lleida, Castellón to Racing Santander, he became the sort of player every coach values and every dressing room trusts. The reward for that kind of career rarely comes all at once.

But when it did, it arrived on the biggest stage for the defender so far. In the 99th minute of the Polish Cup final, with Wisła Kraków moments from defeat, a long ball from the goalkeeper sparked one final attack. A headed flick-on kept the move alive, and as the ball dropped inside the area, Satrústegui met it with a left-footed strike that crashed into the net, dragging Wisła level and forcing extra time.

Minutes later, the trophy belonged to Wisła. The defender who had spent years making his name by stopping goals had scored the most important one when it mattered.

Now, after 396 senior appearances across Spain and Poland, the experienced defender begins a new chapter in India. Standing 1.87 metres tall, comfortable with the ball at his feet and known for reading danger before it develops, Satrústegui brings leadership as much as defensive quality.

He arrives not simply to strengthen NorthEast United’s back line, but to provide the calm, organisation, and experience that ambitious teams rely upon over the course of a demanding season.

The first reactions to Eneko’s arrival

On his move to NEUFC, Satrústegui expressed his excitement and motivation to join an ambitious project

“At this stage of my career, what motivates me most is being part of an ambitious project. When NorthEast United explained their vision, it was an easy decision. I’ve always believed that experienced players have a responsibility to lead by example, and that’s exactly what I hope to do here. I’ll work every day to help the team grow and make our supporters proud.”

Spanish head coach Juan Pedro Benali also shared his views on Eneko’s arrival to NorthEast United FC.

Head coach Juan Pedro Benali said: “Eneko is a defender who tends to read the game before it happens and a leader who has experienced most of the challenges football has to offer. His composure, experience, and personality will be invaluable for a young squad that is still writing its story.”

Club CEO Mandar Tamhane added: “Building a good team is about finding the right balance between youth and experience. Eneko has spent his career competing in demanding environments, and his experience will be invaluable as we continue to build a squad capable of challenging for honours. We are pleased to welcome him to NorthEast United.”
