ISL 2024-25: All six foreigners of Chennaiyin FC
The senior team is stacked with impressive foreign players.
Chennaiyin FC has a vital season ahead of them considering the stakes. Their performance in the 2023-24 Indian Super League was positive as Owen Coyle led the team to a playoff qualification despite suffering from inconsistency in patches.
However, the challenge in the upcoming 2024-25 season will be tougher as all the teams around them have strengthened their squads thanks to the transfer market.
The Marina Machans are two-time ISL winners but their last triumph came six years ago. Since then, the club has battled for playoff qualification and sometimes finished outside it. The objective for the club is to find consistency and challenge for trophies. To achieve this, it has crafted a brilliant lineup of foreign players who will play key roles in the 2024-25 campaign.
Here is a look at all of the foreigners in Chennaiyin FCโs roster, who could be central to their success in the 2024-25 term:
Elsinho โ Brazil
Elsinho is going to be a key player at Chennaiyin FC. The Brazilian defender joined the Marina Machans recently in the summer transfer window from Jamshedpur FC. He was impressive for the Men of Steel in his debut ISL campaign and garnered much praise for his versatility and reliability in defence and midfield.
Ryan Edwards โ England
Ryan Edwards captained Chennaiyin FC last season, leading the squad with drive and purpose. The Englishman emerged as a key individual who helped translate Owen Coyleโs tactics from the board to the pitch. His command of the backline and the ability to keep his troops organized were notable. Going into the 2024-25 term, Edwards is one of the central figures in the squad.
Lukas Brambilla โ Brazil
Lukas Brambilla is one of the new faces going into the 2024-25 season at Chennaiyin FC. The attacking midfielder joins the side from Othellos Athien in Cyprus. He is a newcomer in Indian football and would love to begin his debut season on a positive note. The fans will be hoping that Brambilla brings the Brazilian flair and contributes with a lot of goals and assists.
Daniel Chima Chukwu โ Nigeria
Daniel Chima Chukwuโs arrival at Chennaiyin FC certainly strengthens their forward department. The former East Bengal FC and Jamshedpur FC striker joins his third ISL club, bringing buckets of experience in Indian football with him. He has 20 goals from 58 appearances in the ISL and can be a good addition for the upcoming season.
Jordan Wilmar Gil โ Colombia
Jordan Wilmar Gil joins Chennaiyin FC ahead of the 2024-25 campaign from Punjab FC. The 33-year-old has a similar profile to Daniel Chima Chukwu, a target man who loves to dominate with his physicality and finish chances expertly inside the box. The 33-year-old has scored 16 goals in 26 matches in the ISL already.
Connor Shields โ Scotland
Connor Shields will play his second season with Chennaiyin FC after coming to Indian shores last season. The Scottish forward contributed in multiple positions across the pitch, as a striker, as a winger, and even as a central midfielder. It will be interesting to see how Shields and his skills are utilised by Owen Coyle.
