Gurkirat Singh has been a prolific scorer for India U-20s but wasn’t a regular at Mumbai City.
Chennaiyin FC, guided by Owen Coyle, rallied from a challenging start to secure a playoffs spot in the Indian Super League 2023-24, although they were eventually ousted by FC Goa. Off the pitch, the club’s management are proactively planning for the upcoming season, looking to strengthen their squad by targeting key acquisitions from other clubs.
Chennaiyin FC have been one of the most active teams in the transfer market, having already secured signings such as Daniel Chima Chukwu and PC Laldinpuia from Jamshedpur FC, as previously reported by Khel Now.
The club have further bolstered their roster by signing ISL 2023-24 winner Gurkirat Singh on a two-year contract, with the option to extend for an additional year.
According to sources close to the club, Chennaiyin FC successfully persuaded Gurkirat Singh to join, despite interest from other ISL clubs. The club believe that Singh, with his comprehensive skill-set, has all the qualities needed in a top Indian striker and will be a valuable asset for the team moving forward.
Chennaiyin FC preparing for a fight!
Under the leadership of Owen Coyle, Chennaiyin FC are up for a revamp. Coyle has built a core and is now adding elements as per his requirements to strengthen the team, so that they can fight for the ISL League Winners’ Shield in the upcoming season.
In 2023-24, the Marina Machans fought really hard to secure a spot in the ISL playoffs. They ousted five other contenders to achieve the feat. This time around, to make their journey smoother, the management have decided to assemble a strong unit with a lot of bench strength.
How Gurkirat Singh will be used is a question only Coyle can answer. But at 20, the young Indian forward can act as a prolific scorer (stats speak as he was one of the leading scorers in the India U-20 camp).
