Chennaiyin FC vs East Bengal FC: Four key player battles to watch for in the ISL 2026-27 match

Ramon Tanque is hungry to score his first goal in the ISL.

Clifford Miranda’s Chennaiyin FC are yet to pick up a win after playing four matches in the MG Indian Super League (ISL) 2026-27 season. The Marina Machans are currently 12th in the league with 2 points after their goalless draw against the Kerala Blasters at home.

Facing CFC on Saturday would be the defending ISL champions, East Bengal. The Red & Gold Brigade have started the campaign with back-to-back wins against Churchill Brothers and Inter Kashi, and they will be eager to continue their momentum.

Here are the top four key player battles that could determine the result of the Chennaiyin FC vs East Bengal game this Saturday:

Ramon Tanque vs Diego Zivulic

Anwar Ali walked off injured in East Bengal’s 2-0 loss to Al-Seeb in the AFC Champions League Two on Tuesday. Hence, Diego Zivulic will be tasked with keeping EB’s backline in check against a misfiring Chennaiyin FC side.

The Marina Machans have scored just one goal in 4 ISL games this season. CFC’s striker Ramon Tanque is yet to break his goalscoring jinx in the ISL, and he seems to be growing increasingly frustrated with every passing game. Ramon has taken 17 shots and created 7 chances for his team in four games.

Diego Zivulic has made 57 defensive contributions for his club across four games in the ISL and AFC Champions League Two that he has played in, and he would have to be at his very best against a hungry Chennaiyin attack.

Madih Talal vs Jeakson Singh

Madih Talal is the creative brain in Chennaiyin’s midfield. The Frenchman has created 8 chances, completed 5 dribbles and won 15 duels in 4 ISL games. Madih also has a pass success rate of 87%, which is decent for an attacking midfielder.

Jeakson Singh will be tasked with the job of keeping Talal in check. East Bengal’s defensive midfielder has already helped his side keep one clean sheet. At the young age of 25, Jeakson has the experience of playing in high-profile matches, and hence his presence will matter a lot to his team.

Nikola Stojanovic vs Mohammed Rashid

The most important player battle in this match would be fought in the midfield. Nikola Stojanovic has been in top form for Chennaiyin with 12 recoveries, 8 defensive contributions, and 11 chances created for his side. The player has also taken 7 shots while playing in a box-to-box role in the midfield.

Nikola will be going up against East Bengal’s captain Mohammed Rashid. The Palestinian has won 8 duels in 2 ISL games. To add to this, Rashid has created 3 chances, made 14 recoveries, and 7 defensive contributions.

Nuno Reis vs Dani Ramirez

Emmanuel Imanishimwe has been CFC’s best defender across their four ISL games this season. However, the Rwanda international was sent off in the game against the Kerala Blasters and will be unavailable against East Bengal. Owing to this, Nuno Reis will be pushed into the limelight once again.

The Portuguese centre-back didn’t play the last two games for Chennai, and he was not even in the squad in the game against the Kerala Blasters. Nuno’s experience will be very handy against East Bengal, and to add to his defensive contributions, the 35-year-old also pops with headers in corner kicks.

Dani Ramirez, on the other hand, has scored in both ISL games this season. The Spaniard has also created four chances and has won 5 duels in his two league games. Dani will lead the line for East Bengal once again at the Marina Arena.
