Churchill Brothers vs NorthEast United FC: Three-player battle that can decide ISL 2026-27 season clash

Fatorda Stadium to host the game

Churchill Brothers will welcome NorthEast United to the Fatorda Stadium in Goa for their fourth Indian Super League (ISL) 2026-27 season home game of the season.

This is going to be the first-ever meeting between the two sides, which makes this contest even more interesting.

Both teams will be intrigued to establish dominance over each other, but there can only be one winner, and it remains to be seen who comes out on top in this one.

Churchill Brothers have not had an ideal start to life in the Indian top flight and have lost two of their three opening games. Meanwhile, NorthEast United arrive in Goa on the back of an undefeated streak under their belt and an eye at the top spot.

The Highlanders have dropped points in both of their last two games and are poised to get a win on Thursday, but standing in their way will be a resilient Churchill Brothers side who will make things difficult for them.

On that note, let us take a look at the top three player battles that could dictate the outcome of this game.

Gaurav Bora vs Alaeddine Ajaraie

Gaurav Bora has been one of the best defenders for the ISL debutants. He has been in control of things at the back and has presented the opposition forwards with a challenge every time they have come up against him.

Bora is known for his positioning and tough physicality, which helps him outplay the opposition, and he will want to bring the same energy against Alaeddine Ajaraie.

Meanwhile, the Moroccan superstar will be poised to get his name on the scoresheet for the first time this season, having failed to do so in the last two outings.

Ajaraie has been tremendous at the top but has struggled with his finishing touch, which denies him from finding the back of the net. He will want to refresh his mind and bring his best game to Goa and secure three points for his side.

Sebastián Gutiérrez vs Eneko Satrustegui

Sebastián Gutiérrez has undoubtedly been the best player for Churchill Brothers in the top division. He has been very consistent with his performances and is the joint top scorer in the league with three goals to his name.

In fact, he also has an assist to show for his efforts, which takes his goal contribution tally to four, the most by any player. Gutiérrez will look to exploit the spaces and create and convert chances against the Highlanders come Thursday.

But, standing in his way, will be NorthEast United’s most experienced man, Eneko Satrustegui. The Spanish defender brings with him a bag full of experience and expertise, which has come in very handy for Juan Pedro Benali so far.

Eneko will look to use his physical presence and technical abilities to contain the danger created by Sebastián Gutiérrez and keep him at bay.

Maibam Deny Singh vs Jithin MS

Maibam Deny Singh has not had an ideal campaign so far, but Thursday’s fixture presents him with another opportunity to shine. Singh is expected to start at the left-back position and keep things tight at the back.

He needs to be disciplined with his moves at the left-back position and close down spaces quickly to avoid any danger from the opposition forwards. In short, he will have to keep a check on an in-form Jithin MS, and if he manages to do so, Churchill Brothers will have an upper hand in the contest.

Jithin, on the other hand, is the most in-form player for the Highlanders. He is their top scorer with two goals in four matches, including a brilliant goal in the last game. He is fresh off a dominant performance against Bengaluru FC, where he split the backline into two halves with his raw pace and technical brilliance.

Jithin will want to exploit spaces and make quick moves into the box to find the back of the net and win the game for NorthEast United.
