Mohun Bagan broke the previously held record in the ISL 2023-24 season.
Performing consistently well in every game in any league of the world is a very tough job to do. It takes a lot of effort, discipline, and hard work to achieve it because football is a very unpredictable game where anything can go wrong and it can completely change everything for the football club in that season.
In the Indian Super League (ISL), every club fights each other to attain the maximum points they can, as the league winner is awarded the League Shield. Some clubs have made records of earning the most points in one season whereas other clubs have went on to make a new record of their own.
The ISL is very well known for its unpredictability as all the teams are usually of the same quality and always give their opponents tough competition. In the Indian Super League, many teams have broken their opponent’s record of the most points earned in an ISL season, and here we will look at the clubs with the most points in one single ISL season:
10. FC Goa – 2019-20 – 39 points
This was an exceptional season for the Gaurs as they went on to win the maiden League Shield and finished their season with 39 points. Considering at that time only 18 league games were played in a season, this was a very impressive performance from the Goa team. FC Goa legend Coro was the top scorer for them. Out of the 18 matches, they won 12, drew three, and lost three. They had a goal difference of 23, and they achieved qualification for the 2021 AFC Champions League group stage, scripting history in the process.
9. Mohun Bagan – 2020-21 – 40 points
Mohun Bagan in the 2020-21 season were a top-quality side that scored lots of goals and became a pretty tough side to beat. They possessed all top-quality players in every position on the field. They finished the season with 40 points but unfortunately, were not able to win the League Shield. Moreover, they also narrowly missed out on the trophy. However they qualified for the 2022 AFC Cup playoff round.
8. Mumbai City FC – 2020-21 – 40 points
This was a historic season for Mumbai City FC as they won the league shield and also secured their place in the Group stage of the AFC Champions League. They also won the ISL final to win the playoff trophy completing the double. This humongous achievement came under Sergio Lobera. Out of the 20 league games, they won 12, drew four, and lost four.
7. Bengaluru FC – 2017-18 – 40 points
This was the debut season for Bengaluru FC in the ISL and it was surely a historic one for them as they earned 40 points from the league games. They played 18 games, won 13, drew once, and lost only four times. They topped the points table and secured the qualification of the playoff but in the ISL final, they lost to Chennaiyin FC by 3-2. This season was very well known for Sunil Chhetri and Miku’s partnership as both of them scored a total of 24 goals that term.
6. Hyderabad FC – 2022-23 – 42 points
The Hyderabad side led by Manolo Marquez surprised everyone when they finished the league games with 42 points. Unfortunately, they lost out to Mumbai City for the League Shield battle as the Islanders ended their campaign with 46 points. This was the fourth season for Hyderabad FC in the ISL. They reached the semi-finals, but lost to Mohun Bagan in the second leg, in the penalties (4-3). They won 13 matches, drew three, and lost four.
5. Jamshedpur FC – 2021-22 – 43 points
This was the best season for Jamshedpur FC as they won their maiden trophy under manager Owen Coyle. This season was player behind closed doors and the Men of Steel were the best side that season. They played 20 games out of which they won 13, drew four, and lost three. They also salvaged the playoff spot for the 2023-24 AFC Champions League. Greg Stewart was the player of the season as he was the best player for Jamshedpur without a doubt. In the ISL semi-final however, they lost to Kerala Blasters with a 2-1 aggregate score.
4. FC Goa – 2023-24 – 45 points
The Gaurs implemented a lot of changes in the 2023-24 season, including new manager Manolo Marquez who brought in some top-quality players with him. FC Goa finished the league with the highest points tally in their history. In the first half of the season, they were favorites to win the league but eventually, due to inconsistent performances, they dropped points and finished third behind Mumbai City and Mohun Bagan.
3. Mumbai City FC – 2022-23 – 46 points
Mumbai City won the ISL shield with a record 46 points, which at that time was the highest points tally by an ISL team. Under Des Buckingham, Mumbai City played some of the best attacking play that the league had ever seen. They lost in the semi-finals but overall had an amazing season as they once again qualified for the AFC Champions League. Oh, they were on an 18-match unbeaten run too!
2. Mumbai City FC – 2023-24 – 47 points
Mumbai City’s 2023-24 season was full of ups and downs as after a very disappointing AFC Champions League group stage campaign, Des Buckingham left the club to join Oxford United, and Petr Kratky was appointed as their new head coach. Moreover, some key players like Greg Stewart and Rostyn Griffiths left the club mid-season. Mumbai lost the league shield in the last league fixture to Mohun Bagan. However, they earned their revenge by defeating the Mariners in the ISL final and lifting the trophy for the second time.
1. Mohun Bagan – 2023-24 – 48 points
Mohun Bagan started the ISL 2023-24 season with confidence but eventually lost momentum, which led to the sacking of manager Juan Fernando. Antonio Lopez Habas was brought back to guide the team. The 66-year-old led the Mariners to win the league shield with a record 48 points and also qualify for the ACL 2 group stages.
