Mohun Bagan Super Giant picked up a gritty 1-0 win over rivals East Bengal in the Indian Super League (ISL) in the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata on Saturday (19 October). Jamie Maclaren put the Mariners in the lead with a well-taken strike in the 41st minute, after which his side could play with more freedom.
Dimitri Petratos then came on as a substitute and won a penalty for his side, which he himself converted in the 89th minute to seal the win for his side. Here are all the player ratings from the game.
East Bengal (by Uttiyo Sarkar)
Prabhsukhan Gill – 6.5
In his return to the starting eleven, Gill produced a pretty commendable performance. He made five key saves, especially a huge reflex one to deny Manvir Singh in the first half. Could’ve done a bit better for Maclaren’s strike, but he was sharp and reactive throughout the game. Bit unlucky to concede the late penalty.
Mohamad Rakip – 5.5
Rakip had a tough outing against the speedy Liston Colaco, often getting outpaced by him. Failed to neutralize their attacks through the left and provided little attacking threat.
Anwar Ali – 5.0
With all the spotlight being on Anwar Ali, he occasionally buckled under the pressure. Gave away the ball unnecessarily a few times in the first half, with one misplaced pass leading to the chance leading to Mohun Bagan’s goal. He also lost track of Maclaren behind him for the goal. Recovered after that, making four clearances. But the ball leading to Petratos being fouled by the penalty also came past him.
Hector Yuste – 6.0
Yuste was quite sturdy against his former side and read the moves well to clear the danger. He made five clearances and four possession recoveries, cutting out chances and also moved the ball forward swiftly.
Provat Lakra – 7.0
Lakra was industrious and solid on the left side, working hard to keep Manvir Singh’s threat neutralized. He put in the extra work to win many challenges, making two tackles, winning six duels, and making three possession recoveries.
Souvik Chakrabarti – 5.5
Souvik was too static with his work in midfield, being too inclined to stick to his zone. Worked hard to make three recoveries, but was inefficient with his passing and failed to protect his midfield line from being penetrated.
Saul Crespo – 6.5
Crespo was quite the proactive figure in East Bengal’s movement and someone who liked taking risks and being a bit more adventurous. He propped a few nice attacking moves with his forward passes and also created two chances. Helped instill his presence in midfield with four duels won and five possession recoveries.
Madih Talal – 4.5
Talal failed to weave his creative magic against Mohun Bagan. He couldn’t really get into the best positions and his final product was frustrating, as the Frenchman couldn’t create any genuine chances.
Nandhakumar Sekar – 5.0
Nandhakumar was a bit scrappy on the right, failing to get the better of Subhasish Bose. Made a few nice forward runs, but his final delivery was awry and unable to rattle the Mariners’ backline.
David Lalhlansanga – 4.5
Found it tough against Mohun Bagan’s sturdy backline. Had a few decent touches but couldn’t pose a major goal threat.
Cleiton Silva – 4.5
The experienced forward had a frustrating outing in the derby. Had a few swipes at goal but was nowhere close to scoring. Cleiton lacked energy or flair in the attacking third, failing to really create anything big.
Substitutes
PV Vishnu – 6.0
Vishnu was disciplined with his passing and made a few nice runs, but couldn’t pose a major goal threat.
Dimitrios Diamantakos – 5.5
The Greek forward used his physicality to win a few nice duels, but his work in the box was awry.
Jesin TK – 6.0
Jesin showed promise with his surging forward runs and even came close to scoring at times.
Lalchungnunga – N/R
Nunga helped bring a bit more defensive solidity to his side, using his physicality to win challenges.
Mark Zothanpuia – N/R
Came on as a late substitute for Lakra.
Mohun Bagan (By Dipro Mukherjee)
Vishal Kaith – 6.0
The majority of the game didn’t test the fan-favorite custodian, with the exception of one moment when he made a diving save from an attempt inside the 18-yard box.
Subhasish Bose – 6.5
The skipper did seem surprisingly quiet on Derby Day. He made only two interceptions and a solitary clearance throughout the game. However, Subhasish also made five recoveries and registered a complete succession rate when it came to aerial duels as well as ground duels.
Tom Aldred – 6.5
The Scottish defender has been a constant in the Mariners’ defensive third. He completed the most accurate passes in the game, made two crucial clearances, a block within the 18-yard box, and a single interception. Tom was flawless during the aerial duels, but when it came to being on the soil, he did get outplayed once.
Alberto Rodriguez – 5.5
He seemed to have missed quite a few beats of his spontaneous rhythm tonight. He failed to make his mark in the game and had a comparatively better output than his natural self.
Ashish Rai – 5.0
Ashish Rai got dispossessed on the flanks by East Bengal players quite often and had almost no valuable contribution to the Mariner’s defence in this crucial tie whatsoever.
Liston Colaco – 5.5
Liston was fairly effective on the left flank, trying to make his incisive runs worthwhile. Though his attempts mostly went off target, however, he did create a big chance early on in the game.
Anirudh Thapa – 7.0
Anirudh Thapa was one of the top performers for Mohun Bagan tonight. He created the most chances (4) and had a long ball as well as crossing accuracy of 100%. He was also defensively rewarding, falling deep to help the defense. He did make three interceptions and two recoveries as well.
Apuia Ralte – 6.5
Apuia had a good game throughout, making his mark in the centre of the park. His link-up play with Anirudh Thapa and Manvir Singh helped the Green and Maroons build up their momentum and launch the ball into the final third with Greg Stewart and Jamie Maclaren leading the front.
Manvir Singh – 7.0
Manvir Singh assisted Jamie Maclaren in the first half, who scored the only open goal of the game. Manvir’s run on the right flank and a controlled through ball into the 18-yard box was cleverly netted home by the Australian striker into the near post. However, he got dispossessed by Provat Lakra often as Manvir fell short of Provat’s strong physique.
Greg Stewart – 6.5
Greg Stewart seemed to be struggling a bit today for being man-marked by the East Bengal players. His passes and throughs also got intercepted by the opposition in the majority of the scenarios.
Jamie Maclaren – 8
The Australian linchpin proved yet again why he is worthy of the hype that he receives from Mohun Bagan’s fans and supporters. Maclaren scored the only open goal of the game from Manvir’s through ball of the right flank and also had 100% shot accuracy.
Substitutes
Dimitri Petratos – 7.0
He came in as a substitute for Jamie Maclaren and converted from the spot in the 89th minute after being fouled by Prabsukhan Gill, who tried to recover the ball from Dimitri’s feet in a one-on-one situation within the 18-yard box.
Sahal Abdul Samad – N/A
Ashique Kuruniyan – N/A
Jason Cummings – N/A
