East Bengal were down to 9-men within 30 minutes of the game.
East Bengal fought to earn their first point of the 2024-25 Indian Super League (ISL) campaign with a 0-0 draw against Mohammedan Sporting on Saturday (9 November).
They were reduced to nine men after Naorem Mahesh Singh and Nandhakumar Sekar were both sent off near the 30th-minute mark. This forced the Kolkata giants to show impressive defensive resolve to keep a clean sheet and end their six-game losing run in the competition.
Oscar Bruzon’s thoughts
After the match, Oscar Bruzon believes that East Bengal are getting some unfair treatment from ISL officials regarding receiving red cards and other elements like conceding penalties. He stated: “We are coming here after representing India in the AFC Challenge League. There were no tough decisions and no bad talks in that competition.
“We feel there is no respect for us in the ISL. We are conceding penalties and getting red cards too often. There is a different criteria for East Bengal and the opponents. I can’t say further before getting a ban. I think the club will take action.
“The actions of my players for the two red cards are not ok. We cannot take action on referees, but we will for the players. What I mean by different criteria take in the fouls and the cards. The new rule for FIFA is when a foul action begins outside the box but ends inside the box, it’s a penalty but we didn’t get any,” Oscar Bruzon also opined.
Oscar Bruzon also criticized Naorem Mahesh Singh for the sloppy way in which he got sent off after hitting out at referee Harish Kundu. Oscar Bruzon claimed: “Mahesh is a very important player in our team. The team needs much, much more from him. His recent performances are not the ones I’ve seen from him in former seasons. We have to work to help put fixes in place in his performance. The Mahesh everyone expects is not the one here,” Oscar Bruzon also stated.
East Bengal will return to ISL action on November 29 against NorthEast United at the Salt Lake Stadium and will look to get their first win of the league campaign.
