FC Goa vs Chennaiyin FC: Key Player Battles to watch out for in ISL 2026-27 opener

Former FC Goa players Ayush Chhetri and Brison Fernandes will be representing Chennaiyin FC in the 2026-27 ISL season

FC Goa and Chennaiyin FC will resume their historic rivalry on the pitch this Saturday as the two Indian Super League (ISL) giants are scheduled to battle it out on the opening day of the 2026-27 season.

Both sides will be managed by Indian coaches in this ISL campaign, as Gauramangi Singh is responsible for leading FC Goa’s revival, while Clifford Miranda has retained his position as the head coach of Chennai. With respect to the players, both clubs had a busy summer transfer window.

Here are the key player battles to watch out for in the ISL game between FC Goa and Chennaiyin FC.

Sandesh Jhingan vs Ramon Tanque

Chennaiyin FC had a dismal 2025-26 ISL season in front of goal, scoring just 9 goals in 13 games. The Marina Machans signed Ramon Tanque on loan from Indonesian club Persib Bandung over the summer, with hopes of overcoming their goalscoring woes.

However, Ramon’s first outing in the Chennaiyin blue won’t be easy, as he will be going up against Sandesh Jhingan – one of India’s finest defenders over the last decade. The FC Goa centre-back helped his side keep five clean sheets last season, winning 49 duels and making 95 defensive contributions.

Ramon Tanque, on the other hand, helped Persib Bandung win the Indonesian league last season, contributing 8 goals and 3 assists in 28 games. If Jhingan manages to keep Ramon silent, CFC might struggle to get goals against a sturdy Goan backline.

Seriton Fernandes vs Brison Fernandes

Brison Fernandes’ move from FC Goa to Chennaiyin FC grabbed a lot of eyeballs over the summer. The Goan club put up a post highlighting Brison’s departure in a questionable way, and hence, the winger will be looking to prove his worth to his former employers on Saturday.

The 25-year-old Brison will start on Chennaiyin’s left wing and will be looking to take on the Goa defence with his pace. Standing opposite the CFC player would likely be FC Goa’s veteran right-back, Seriton Fernandes.

The 33-year-old Seriton has been used sparsely by FC Goa in the last two seasons. However, since Boris Singh has joined East Bengal, Seriton would be Goa’s best choice at right-back

Franchu vs Ayush Chhetri

Ayush Chhetri is the other FC Goa player who made the move to Chennaiyin FC over the summer. The central midfielder is well known for his defensive capabilities and has become an ever-present fan favourite among the Fatorda faithful.

Ayush’s debut for Chennai would not just be against nostalgia, but the youngster will also be going up against Francisco Feuillasier (Franchu). The Argentinian is a Real Madrid academy product, and he made his debut in the ISL with the Kerala Blasters last season.

Franchu scored 2 goals and made 3 assists in 6 games, quickly becoming a fan favourite in Kochi. However, with uncertainty surrounding the Blasters, the attacking midfielder moved to FC Goa over the summer. Franchu will be looking to make a mark for his new club in their ISL opener against CFC on Saturday.

Chiki vs Nuno Reis

Chennaiyin FC’s new-look defence will have a new leader in Nuno Reis. The Portuguese centre-back was signed from Mumbai City FC, and his experience will be vital for the Southern giants as they look to regain their glory days.

For FC Goa, the starting centre-forward position will be a toss-up between Chiki and Jorge Ortiz. The younger option, Chiki, would be the likely starter and given that he has a wealth of experience playing in Spain, expect the 30-year-old to cause a lot of problems for Nuno and his partners in defence.
