ISL 2023-24: FC Goa vs Hyderabad FC – Build-up

FC Goa will welcome a struggling Hyderabad FC in their next Indian Super League (ISL) contest at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa on Friday. The Gaurs have already secured their 2023-24 playoff berth but finishing in the top two places will be on the agenda.

Manolo Marquez, head coach of FC Goa, will likely field a strong team against his former employers as he will look to secure three points. As for the Nizams, they are playing for pride and might spoil FCG’s chances of a top-two finish by causing an upset.

FC Goa are still in with a chance of winning the ISL Shield or finishing second behind the league leaders by the end of the season. The top two teams go into the semi-finals directly, avoiding the knockout fixtures before them.

FC Goa has been regaining its mojo lately, having scored twice in each of their last two matches. The last time they went on a longer such run than this was of three games in January 2023. Their defensive solidity ever since Marquez took over the reins has been laudable, having given away only 13 goals from inside the box this season, which is the least amongst all teams in the competition.

Hyderabad FC have nothing left to play for but their pride. Thangboi Singto will expect his band of young Indian footballers to give a good account of themselves as the club stares at an uncertain future.

Since the start of 2024, Hyderabad FC has conceded 8.8 fouls per game in the ISL, the lowest such rate of all teams. However, Hyderabad FC is the only side with multiple red cards during the same span – three. All in all, an exciting contest could play out if Hyderabad FC brings its A-game to the table.
