The Indian footballing legend has been in sublime form for the Blues.

Gerard Zaragoza’s Bengaluru FC have made an emphatic start to the Indian Super League (ISL) season, securing victories in all of their opening three fixtures against East Bengal, Hyderabad FC, and Mohun Bagan Super Giant.

Currently sitting at the top of the ISL points table, the Blues have displayed dominant performances, with none other than their legendary captain Sunil Chhetri, leading from the front. Chhetri, who recently announced his retirement from international football, has been in phenomenal form, netting three goals in three matches.

His clinical finishing has placed him at the summit of the Golden Boot list, once again proving his unmatched consistency and hunger for success. Despite stepping away from the international stage, Chhetri has shown no signs of slowing down, continuing to be a talisman for Bengaluru FC, leaving fans and critics alike in awe of his ageless brilliance.

Gerard Zaragoza believes that Bengaluru FC is immensely fortunate to have a figure like Sunil Chhetri in their ranks. The Spanish coach emphasized how Chhetri, despite being 40 years old, continues to elevate the entire team’s performance. Zaragoza acknowledges that Chhetri is not just a player but an inspiring force who relentlessly pushes everyone in the squad, including himself, to exceed their limits.

Zaragoza said, “Sunil Chettri pushes the limit of every single player and person in this team. He is a legendary icon. The way he trains even now after retiring is a beacon of inspiration for all of us. He is a bit shy to accept praises. But I keep telling him, Go enjoy. You’ve earned this respect for the kind of legacy you’ve left behind in these 20 years.”

Zaragoza admires Chhetri’s determination to restore Bengaluru FC to their former glory. Since their last Indian Super League title in 2018, the club has been striving to break their silverware drought, and Chhetri is on a mission to secure the elusive ISL Shield. Zaragoza adds that Sunil’s dedication is unwavering, and his leadership, both on and off the field, is driving the team closer to that goal.

Interestingly, Zaragoza reveals a more personal side about the footballing icon, noting that Chhetri remains humble despite the immense respect and admiration he receives. According to Zaragoza, whenever fans approach Chhetri for selfies or shower him with praises, he becomes visibly shy. The coach often tells Chhetri to embrace these moments, reminding him that he has rightfully earned this recognition through his two-decade-long service to Indian football. Zaragoza is adamant that Chhetri deserves all the accolades that come his way, as his legacy transcends the sport itself.
