Mohun Bagan’s shocking defeat against Chennayin FC took the limelight in ISL 2023-24 gameweek 20.
The Indian Super League (ISL) returned to action for its final leg of the 2023-24 season after the international break. It was a game-changing week for a lot of clubs. While Kerala Blasters qualified for the knockouts, Odisha FC and Mohun Bagan dropped crucial points.
20 goals were scored across six games this week. Moreover, the clubs outside the top six had a fantastic week and made a significant advancement in their quest for a playoff berth this year. On that note, let us take a look at the talking points from Gameweek 20.
Mumbai City FC go five points clear at the top of the table
The defending league shield winners have increased their lead to five points at the top of the ISL summit as we enter the final month of the 2023-24 season. Mumbai City FC put in a dominant performance and handed Hyderabad FC a 0-3 defeat away from home.
With his win, the Islanders have taken an important step ahead in pursuit of their third league shield title. Mumbai City FC currently sit at the top of the ISL table with 44 points to their name in 20 games and are five points ahead of the second-placed Odisha FC who have also played 20 games so far.
East Bengal keep their playoffs hope alive with a massive win against Kerala Blasters
In the final game of this week, East Bengal gave Kerala Blasters a very tough time in Kochi and handed them their second consecutive defeat at home this season. Moreover, the Red and Gold also scored four goals past the Blasters and made their intentions very clear heading into the final games of the season.
It seemed as if Carles Cuadrat’s side made the most out of the international break as they looked a completely rejuvenated side as the league returned to action after a few weeks. This has reignited East Bengal’s hopes for a playoff spot as they are just one point away from the sixth spot and will play a sixth-placed Bengaluru FC in their upcoming game.
Chennaiyin FC pull off an upset against Mohun Bagan
Chennaiyin FC also jumped on the bandwagon and made things very interesting in the context of the race for the final playoff spot this season. The Marina Machans took a trip to the City of Joy to face Mohun Bagan Super Giants and went into the game as second favorites considering the Mariners’ red-hot form ever since the turn of the year. But, they turned the tables around and pulled off a massive victory against the home side.
Mohun Bagan were leading 1-0 until the 72nd minute when Jordan Murray scored an equalizer and set the tone for a comeback win for his side. Ryan Edwards scored the second for Chennaiyin FC in the 80th minute before Petratos equalized in the 94th minute. And Irfan Yadwad’s brilliance coupled with a mistake from Vishal Kaith put Chennaiyin FC 2-3 up in the 97th minute.
