Hyderabad FC won the ISL Cup in the 2021-22 season
Hyderabad has always had a profound connection to football, a legacy carried through legendary players like Rahim Sahab and Tulsidas Balaram, whose contributions shone brightly on the national stage during the Golden Age of Indian football.
Yet, for several years, the city’s primary favourite sports appeared to be cricket and kabaddi, which had become dominant in the local area. However, 2019 marked an important moment, as football made a comeback to Hyderabad.
This revival was due to the arrival of Hyderabad FC through the Indian Super League (ISL), re-establishing the city as a territory for the beautiful game once again.
Since they entered the Indian Super League, Hyderabad FC have always displayed a pattern of extremes in their league positions.
Their seasons have either seen The Nawabs placed among the top four playoff contenders or at the very bottom of the table, with no mid-table mediocrity in between.
However the 2021-22 season was a special season for the Yellow and Black when they lifted the ISL trophy.
The rise of the Yellow and Black
The COVID-19 pandemic had hit the country, and the ISL was forced to take place in Goa behind closed doors. After narrowly missing their chances in the 2020-21 season in the match against FC Goa, Head Coach Manolo Marquez was determined to win the cup.
With experienced foreigners like Bart Ogbeche, Javier Sivero, Edu Garcia, Juanan and Indian players like Akash Mishra, Ashish Rai, Nikhil Poojary, Mohammad Yasir and others, Manolo Marquez formed a team that seemed strong and determined, with their eyes set on the trophy.
Winning over the Kerala Blasters to lift their first-ever trophy

The Indian Super League Final on March 20, 2022, at the Fatorda Stadium in Goa had some unforgettable drama. Kerala Blasters FC took the lead in the 68th minute through Rahul KP.
However, Hyderabad FC refused to give up, with Sahil Tavora levelling the score in the 87:19th minute with a sensational, long-range effort. The game’s intensity carried it all the way to a decisive penalty shootout.
The tension in the penalty shootout was palpable, but Hyderabad FC goalkeeper Laxmikant Kattimani rose to the occasion. He delivered two crucial saves, first denying Marko Leskovic and then Nishu Kumar, keeping the game in Hyderabad’s favour.
For Hyderabad FC, João Victor calmly converted his spot-kick past Prabhsukhan Gill. This was followed by a miss from Javier Siverio, whose effort struck the goalpost.
For Kerala Blasters FC, Ayush Adhikari converted his penalty into a goal and then for the Nawabs, Bartholomew Ogbeche found the net, but Kattimani’s save from Jeakson Singh’s attempt proved crucial.
The ultimate moment of glory arrived when Halicharan Narzary stepped up, sealing the ISL trophy for Hyderabad FC.
