Jordan Murray has become the new poster boy of the Furnace.

Jordan Murray, the Australian forward who has become a household name in Indian football, recently sat down for an exclusive interview, sharing insights into his journey, his love for India, and his experiences in the Indian Super League.

From his early days in Australia to becoming one of the most beloved foreign players in India, Murray’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and a deep connection with the Indian football community. Stay tuned for this exciting rollercoaster journey where Jordan takes us from his time in Australia to becoming the most beloved player in Asian football.

Growing Up in Australia and Early Football Journey

Jordan Murray’s football journey began in Australia, a country known for producing world-class athletes across various sports. Reflecting on his early days, Murray emphasized the importance of grassroots development in Australia, which played a pivotal role in shaping his career.

“The abundance of grassroots opportunities in Australia is incredible. Whether it’s football, cricket, or rugby, kids have access to facilities and mentors who help them grow. For me, football was always the passion, and I was lucky to have the support system to pursue it,” Murray shared.

He also credited his father for instilling a love for the game in him. “My dad always believed I would become a footballer. From the moment he saw my ultrasound, he knew. That belief and support from my family have been my driving force,” he added with a smile.

The Dream Debut and Rise to Prominence

Murray’s professional career took off when he signed with Central Coast Mariners, one of Australia’s most storied clubs. Recalling his debut, he said, “It was a dream come true. Playing for a club with such a rich history and passionate fanbase was surreal. I’ll never forget the feeling of signing that first professional contract.”

His performances in the Australian league caught the attention of scouts, and soon, he found himself embarking on a new adventure in India.

Falling in Love with India and the ISL

When asked about his first impressions of India, Murray’s face lit up. “Coming to India was unexpected, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life. The culture, the people, and the passion for football here are incredible,” he said.

Murray’s first stint in the ISL was with Kerala Blasters, a club known for its massive and passionate fanbase. “Playing in front of 30,000 fans at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was an unforgettable experience. The energy, the chants, and the love from the fans made me feel at home,” he recalled.

Despite the challenges of playing in a bio-bubble during the COVID-19 pandemic, Murray embraced the opportunity and quickly became a fan favourite. His performances on the pitch and his connection with the fans solidified his place in Indian football history.

The Jamshedpur FC Chapter and Winning the ISL Shield

Murray’s journey took another exciting turn when he joined Jamshedpur FC. Under the guidance of coach Owen Coyle, Murray and his teammates achieved the unthinkable by winning the ISL Shield in the 2021-22 season.

“That season was special. We were a tight-knit group, almost like a family. The camaraderie off the pitch translated into our performances on it. We fought for each other, and that’s what made us champions,” Murray said.

He also highlighted the importance of experienced players in the squad. “Having players like Greg Stewart and Peter Hartley was invaluable. Their experience and leadership helped us stay focused and motivated throughout the season.”

The Nagin Celebration and Connection with Fans

One of the most iconic aspects of Murray’s time in India has been his famous “Nagin” celebration. When asked about its origin, he laughed and said, “It started as a joke with my Indian teammates during a FIFA session. They dared me to do it after scoring a goal, and it just stuck. Seeing the fans enjoy it and replicate it has been amazing.”

The celebration has become a symbol of Murray’s bond with Indian fans. “It’s not just about the goals; it’s about bringing joy to the people. If my celebration can put a smile on someone’s face, that’s all that matters,” he added.

On Being Half Indian and Half Australian

Murray’s love for India is evident in the way he speaks about the country. “I often say I’m half Indian now. The warmth and kindness of the people here have made me feel at home. Whether it’s the fans, my teammates, or the staff, everyone has treated me like family,” he said.

He also expressed his admiration for Indian culture and its similarities with Australia. “Both countries have a rich history and diverse cultures. The love for sports, especially football, is something that connects us.”
