The Highlanders’ first win finally came against the Islanders in ISL after waiting since 2021.

Juan Pedro Benali’s NorthEast United FC thrashed Mumbai City FC with a commanding 0-3 scoreline in an away game at the Mumbai Football Arena in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 tonight. With this victory, the Highlanders will end the year in fourth place with 21 points.

Alaaeddine Ajaraie opened the scoring in just the 46th second of the game. Despite dominating possession, Mumbai City FC failed to convert their chances into goals.

Macarton Nickson, the 20-year-old attacking midfielder for the Highlanders, shone brightly, assisting Ajaraie for the second goal and scoring the third goal himself. For his brilliant performance, he was awarded Player of the Match.

On Macarton performance

In the post-match press conference, Juan Pedro Benali, the Spanish gaffer of NorthEast United FC, shared his thoughts about Macarton Nickson.

Remembering the previous game at the Mumbai Football Arena on March 12, 2024, where NorthEast United lost 4-1 against Mumbai City FC, head coach Benali said, “I remember last season, in the same place, same stadium, against the same team. He cried after the game. Macarton’s game was not so good, and he missed the national team Under-21 or Under-20 selection.”

“That was a very tough day for him. And today, he showed everyone that he deserved it. He played very well, a great young player. But at the same time, he needs to keep his feet on the ground, be humble, and continue to work. It’s only a game,” the Spanish gaffer added.

Macarton has played 10 games this season in the ISL so far. This season, he scored his maiden goal against Jamshedpur FC and has had two goals and one assist in his name so far.

Macarton on his New Year’s aim

Macarton Nickson also shared his thoughts after the match. When asked about his New Year’s goal, the Indian midfielder expressed his desire to earn a call-up to the national team.

He said, “My aim for 2025 is to represent the national team. I want to get the call-up. I’ll be working hard and leaving nothing undone.”

Macarton praised Coach Juan Pedro Benali, saying, “He’s a very nice guy. He helps the youngsters, he’s honest, and he keeps improving us. He’s amazing, just amazing.”
