Kerala Blasters vs Chennaiyin FC: All-time Head-to-Head record

Kerala Blasters did the double over Chennaiyin FC last season

The Southern rivalry will take centre stage on Saturday as Kerala Blasters host Chennaiyin FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi. This particular Indian Super League fixture has always been spicy between the two sides and the stakes will be higher this time around.

Both the Blasters and the Marina Machans are yet to win a game this season and they are both lingering near the foot of the table. With relegation in play, three points will be crucial to both sides as they look to turn around their form.

More than just three points will be on the line on Sunday

Kerala Blasters FC vs Chennaiyin FC

The rivalry between Chennaiyin FC and Kerala Blasters kicked off in 2014. While the Marina Machans picked three wins over their opponents in the inaugural season, the Blasters had the last laugh and eliminated their neighbours in an heated semifinal affair.

The Mendoza-led Chennaiyin FC took home the bragging rights in 2015, but CK Vineeth rallied Kerala right back in 2016, getting one over their Southern rivals and living up to the importance and expectations of this fixture.

Chennaiyin’s best season against their rivals came in 2019-20 as they beat the Blasters 3-1 at home and trashed them 6-3 away, in what is still one of the most iconic games of the ISL. However, since the 2020-21 season, the two-time champions have won just once, whereas the Blasters have won five times, completely flipping the switch on the Marina Machans.

Going into Sunday’s game, both Chennaiyin FC and Kerala Blasters are far from their best. Yet to pick up a win after three games, the two sides are in danger of being involved in the relegation dogfight come the end of the season.

Given that both clubs have underachieved in recent seasons, there has also been a drastic fall in the attendance numbers for both clubs. Nevertheless, a big win over their rivals could be the boost that could help either club turn a new leaf aside from the bragging rights that naturally comes along with the result.
