Mohun Bagan Super Giant were held to a 2-2 draw by Mumbai City FC in the first game of the 2024-25 Indian Super League (ISL) season at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata on Friday (13 September). The Mariners took the lead in the 8th minute through an own-goal from Tiri and then made it 2-0 in the 28th minute through Alberto Rodriguez.

But then the Islanders marked their comeback in the second half. Tiri pulled one back with a close-range goal in the 70th minute before super-sub Thaer Krouma won his side a point with a brilliant 90th-minute strike. Here are the Indian players’ ratings for the game.

Mohun Bagan (by Uttiyo Sarkar)

Vishal Kaith – 5.5

Kaith made a few simple saves but was unable to do much for Tiri’s strike. Completely outwitted for Krouma’s goal.

Subhasish Bose – 6.5

The Mohun Bagan skipper was alert in keeping Chhangte quiet, marking him nicely and being composed at the back. Made three tackles, and two clearances and won six duels in a solid defensive effort. Slightly slow to react to Tiri’s goal.

Dippendu Biswas – 6.0

The young centre-back did a decent job at maintaining a sturdy defensive shape. Only made a couple of clearances but didn’t buckle under pressure and did his job relatively well.

Asish Rai – 7.0

Rai was a highly energetic figure on the right, making relentless runs down the wide area. Neutralized Bipin Singh’s threat with his compact defending and put in a lot of effort with his challenges. Made four clearances, two clearances, three interceptions, and won seven duels.

Lalengmawia Ralte – 6.5

Ralte was at his composed self against his ex-side. Moved the ball around nicely and covered a lot of ground to help stop the Islanders’ breaks, making four tackles and winning eight duels. But then outwitted by Krouma for his goal.

Abhishek Suryavanshi – 5.0

Sloppy with his passes, often giving the ball away. Maintained decent positioning to keep a nice shape, but lost nine duels in midfield.

Liston Colaco – 6.0

Colaco made a few fiery runs down the left and delivered a tricky pass leading to Tiri’s own goal.  Showcased an impressive work rate winning seven duels and making six possession recoveries, but his final product wasn’t as precise as necessary.

Substitutes

Sahal Abdul Samad – 6.0

Sahal made some impressive defence-splitting passes to create some decent scenarios but was unable to do anything big.

Anirudh Thapa – 5.0

Thapa was ousted by Noufal for the second goal, losing mark of him to allow him to make the pass.

Suhail Bhat – N/R

Lachenpa Phurba – 4.5

Two goals were conceded tonight, and the Sikkim goalkeeper was at fault in both of them. And the mistakes were not different from each other. Both times, he failed to deal with crosses deep into his box. For the first goal, he deflected the ball from its path, making the bounce awkward for Tiri. Then, his punch for the second goal’s cross was weak, allowing Mohun Bagan to make a second attempt to cross.

Mehtab Singh – 6.5

Mehtab Singh had two difficult balls to deal with in the first half, the half in which Mohun Bagan were in their best-attacking phase. And he did well in both of them. However, despite finishing the game with a 93% passing accuracy, the centre-back was shying away from playing the balls forward. His more experienced partner, Tiri, was the one who had the lion’s share of the long ball attempts. Otherwise, Mehtab was heavily active in the Islanders’ defensive game.

Sahil Panwar – 6.0

Sahil had very little support to offer in the attacking phase of the Islanders’ play as Bipin and Rane combined well going forward. And the left-back held his own in the few instances he was asked to be involved in. Finished with three passes in the final third and a 90% passing accuracy.

Valpuia – 7.5

Was the pick of the defenders in the game from both sides. Perhaps the most important contribution of the 24-year-old right-back came in the 18th minute when he blocked Dimitri Petratos’ final pass to Jason Cummings, thereby killing a dangerous counter-attack. Kept Liston Colaco quiet, and the only time he let the Indian international dribble past him, Mohun Bagan managed to score.

Jayesh Rane – 7.0

Very physical game by the Mumbai City midfielder. His work rate was beyond impressive as he managed to offer width on instances Bipin wanted to cut in and occupy the left-half space when the former hugged the touchline. Had a poor tackle on Ashish Rai that on another day could have resulted in a straight red. Rane managed to win three of the nine duels he competed in.

Bipin Singh – 8.5

On another day, Bipin would have finished the game with a goal contribution. In the first half itself, Bipin had more than five dangerous crosses that went begging. However, he shouldn’t have gotten involved in the goal that was called offside, as the shot was on target and out of the reach of Vishal Kaith. Although two-footed, was more effective on the left. Finished the game with 0.49 xA.

Lallianzuala Chhangte – 7.5/10

Chhangte started the game very well and had a run in the 12th minute in which he beat two Mohun Bagan defenders before failing to cross. However, Chhangte’s cross in the 14th minute of the game was the highlight of his performance, a pinpoint cross in open space was headed wide off the target by Nikos Karelis. Finished the game with four dribbles.

Substitutes

PN Noufal – 8.0

Another great display by an Indian on the wings tonight. Overtook the responsibility of the left wing from Bipin and provided the assist for the equaliser. Finished the game with two chances created.

Vikram Pratap Singh – 5.5

Vikram was called into the game very late and the only meaningful contribution of the player was a foul that earned him a booking.

Brandon Fernandes – N/A

Came on too late to be able to stamp his authority on the game but took his first point home in Mumbai’s colours.
