Sergio Lobera’s men dictated the tempo from the opening whistle, creating several early chances. Chennaiyin FC suffered a massive setback just past the half-hour mark when starting goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz was forced off due to an injury, making way for Samik Mitra.

The Mariners capitalized on their dominance deep into first-half stoppage time. Anirudh Thapa delivered a magnificent long-range through ball to slice open the Marina Machans' defense. Jamie Maclaren [45+3'] timed his run to perfection and clinically slotted the ball past the substitute keeper to give the hosts a deserved 1-0 lead at the break.

Chennaiyin FC tried to find a way back into the contest in the second half, with head coach Clifford Miranda introducing fresh legs, including Farukh Choudhary and Gurkirat Singh. However, the Mohun Bagan defense held firm. The game was put to bed in the 65th minute when the talismanic Dimitri Petratos [65'] fired home a brilliant finish, bringing out his trademark celebration and sealing all three points for the home side.
