Mohun Bagan SG vs Chennaiyin FC: Head-to-head record ahead of ISL 2026-27

Mohun Bagan recently won the 2026 IFA Shield.

Mohun Bagan, two-time ISL champions since their merger with ATK FC in 2020, are set to face another former two-time ISL champion, Chennaiyin FC, in game week 3 of the 2026-27 Indian Super League. The Mariners will play their first home game of the season after travelling to Guwahati and Delhi for their opening two fixtures.

The fixture between these two sides is scheduled to kick off on 26 October 2026 at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, with kick-off set for 19:30 IST.

Coming off the back of their 2026 IFA Shield triumph, Mohun Bagan were expected to start their season on a positive note against NorthEast United FC. However, they suffered a 1-0 defeat to the Highlanders, conceding a late winner to Jithin MS and dropping all three points. They bounced back in their next game, though, coming from behind to beat Sporting Club Delhi.

Chennaiyin FC, on the other hand, have endured a difficult few seasons, finishing 13th in the 2025/26 ISL season, just one point above relegation. Their poor form has continued into the new campaign, with the club showing the same struggles in front of goal. Their tendency to concede soft goals was also evident in the opening draw against FC Goa and the recent 2-0 defeat to Bengaluru FC.

While Mohun Bagan have had the upper hand in this fixture in recent years, Chennaiyin FC have shown that, once in a while, they can spring a major surprise, stun the Mariners and claim a victory. Ahead of the game, let’s take a look back at the history these two sides share.

Even during ATK FC’s days in the Indian Super League, Chennaiyin FC and the Kolkata-based side shared a fierce rivalry, with both clubs emerging as powerhouses in the league. In fact, ATK FC’s final game before their merger with Mohun Bagan was the 2019-20 ISL final, where they defeated Chennaiyin FC to clinch the trophy.

Since then, however, Mohun Bagan have clearly had the upper hand in this fixture, remaining unbeaten in 10 of the 12 meetings between the two sides. They have won six games, while four have ended in draws. This highlights the consistency Mohun Bagan have maintained over the years, in stark contrast to Chennaiyin FC’s dramatic fall from champions to a lower-mid-table side.

However, one positive for Chennaiyin FC heading into this game is that both their victories against the Mariners came at the Salt Lake Stadium, with the Marina Machans pulling off dramatic comebacks on both occasions.

The first came during the 2022-23 season, when Thomas Brdaric’s side came from a 1-0 deficit to secure a 2-1 victory in the second half.

The second came on their very next trip to Salt Lake, when Owen Coyle’s Chennaiyin FC faced Mohun Bagan in a must-win clash to keep their playoff hopes alive. While Kauko gave the Mariners the lead, Chennaiyin scored twice in the 72nd and 80th minutes to turn the game around.

Just when the Marina Machans thought they had secured all three points, Petratos equalized in the 94th minute, only for Irfan Yadwad to score again in the 97th minute and announce himself on the big stage.

The Mariners have had the upper hand since then, winning three of their next four meetings, including a 2-0 victory in the 2025-26 AIFF Super Cup. The most recent meeting between the sides also took place at the Salt Lake Stadium and ended in a comfortable 2-0 win for the hosts, with Jamie Maclaren and Dimi Petratos finding the net.
