The Mariners completed a late comeback to get their first victory of the season.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant overcame NorthEast United FC in a 3-2 victory in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 on Monday. Jose Molina’s side went behind first despite the thumping energy of the home crowd backing them up as Mohammed Bemammer smashed in a screamer from outside the box.

The Highlanders’ lead did not last as long as they would have liked as the Mariners wonderkid Dippendu Biswas leveled the proceedings off Dimitri Petratos’ cross. Alaeddine Ajaraie scored once again in the 24th minute to take Juan Pedro Benali’s men ahead and silence the Mariners’ faithful.

Subhasish Bose’s equaliser in the 61st minute seemed to have a foul in its making as he bundled over Gurmeet dangerously, but the referee waived off the protesting NorthEast United players. Sahal and Jason Cummings were the super subs from the bench, combining to get Mohun Bagan in front. The game ended in favor of the home side as they took all three points and left the spirited Highlanders disheartened.

Here are the Indian player ratings from the game.

Mohun Bagan (By Riddhiman Sarkar)

Vishal Kaith – 6

Should have done better from Bemammer’s strike as he was left vulnerable with a bullet shot that rifled into his near post. Picked himself up and established aerial dominance in the box with one punch and four saves.

Ashish Rai – 5.5

Left a big gap behind him almost consistently as Ajaraie exploited the wide areas from diagonal balls. Let the attacker run in and convert a counter early on, but the near post came to the Mariners’ rescue. Watched on as Ajaraie rolled the ball across to Bemammer who smashed it for the first time.

Dippendu Biswas – 8

Weathered pressure effortlessly but conceded possession once in the early stages. Made up for it by equalising from a corner, scoring his first-ever goal, and proving to be a tough man to beat with his swashbuckling tackles and vigilant marking.

Subhasish Bose – 7.5

The Mariners skipper was solid going forward and was equally exemplary in defence but mellowed down as the match progressed. Picked up pace once again as he bundled the ball into the net to bring his side level once again, albeit at the expense of a potentially dangerous clash with Gurmeet.

Anirudh Thapa – 6.5

Thapa held his ground in the middle of the park and positioned himself well to pass the ball out of pressure. However, his defensive positioning and contributions can be questioned as the Indian international lost possession four times and won the only ground challenge he contested. Came off in the 58th minute for Sahal.

Lalengmawia Ralte (Apuia) – 6.5

Apuia maintained a well-oiled midfield with one-touch passes and confident dribbling with Thapa but felt the pressure creeping up on up as his stamina started to deplete, come the second half. Still managed to win all six of his ground duels and his only aerial duel

Liston Colaco – 7

Liston was Mohun Bagan’s livewire down the left, causing problems to the entire NorthEast United defence with his direct dribbling and drawing fouls left and right. Dropped deep to help his team play out from the back as he was given the license to roam.

Manvir Singh – 6.5

Twinkle-toed and physically dominant but couldn’t threaten the Highlanders’ goal enough to give Gurmeet problems. Went off in the 58th minute to give way to Jason Cummings after missing one big chance.

Sahal Abdul Samad – 7

Moved fast and with intent after coming on, finding teammates, and trying to unlock the Highlanders’ stubborn defense. His biggest moment was assisting Jason Cummings for the winner with a pinpoint pass into the box.

Deepak Tangri – 6.5

Came on in the dying stages of the game and did his job well.

NorthEast United FC (By Parashar Kalita)

Gurmeet Singh – 5

A tough day for the No. 1 goalkeeper of the Highlanders. The attackers of Mohun Bagan constantly tested him at the highest level. He was a bit lucky as Manvir’s header was off target in the 36th minute, and Míchel Zabaco made a last-man clearance.

However, his luck ran out during the rain, when the referees missed a clear foul on the line, which resulted in the second goal for the Mariners. He almost conceded another goal in the 85th minute.

Jithin MS – 7

The golden boy recovered a ball in the 23rd minute in the defensive half, creating a counter-attack and providing an assist to the man in form, Alaeddine Ajaraie. The coach changed his position to right winger. He wasn’t as involved in defensive duties in the first half, and some support to his teammate Dinesh could have been better.

Tondonba Singh – 6

The left-back was tasked with handling Manvir Singh. The opening goal could have been avoided if he had managed Dipendu Biswas better.

Asheer Akhtar – 5.5

The central defender played his part but faced a tough challenge from the strong attacking side of the Mariners.

Dinesh Singh – 5.5

In a repeat of the Durand Cup, he was given the responsibility of covering Liston. He did well but received a yellow card in the process. His full focus on Liston left space for Dimitri Petratos on that side.

Muthu Mayakannan – 5

Muthu has become a key player in the midfield for NorthEast United FC. He received a yellow card early on for an unnecessary foul and lost possession frequently in the second half. Like Tondonba, the first goal could have been avoided if he’d put some pressure on Dipendu.

Macarton Louis Nickson – 6.5

He got his first start of the season. The youngster was tasked with marking Néstor Albiach. He took corners for NEUFC, but most were of below-average quality. His second corner created a threat but was cleared by Manvir. Took part in the defense as well.
