NorthEast United FC are the current Durand Cup champions.

The eleventh edition of the Indian Super League (ISL) is just around the corner. With more teams in action, this edition of the Indian top flight is expected to be more entertaining and competitive than ever. The first game will see defending league Shield winners Mohun Bagan host defending champions Mumbai City FC in the City of Joy.

With the league returning to action, the biggest talking point into the season would be NorthEast United FC. The Highlanders are among the founding clubs of the league and have always been stated as underdogs until they did the unthinkable. Juan Pedro Benali has completely changed the way NorthEast United FC operate both on and off the pitch.

Benali took his side on a dream run in the Durand Cup and became the first head coach to win a trophy with the Guwahati-based side. NorthEast United were the only team in the tournament that won every single game and eventually won the trophy against a high-profile Mohun Bagan side. The Highlanders went 2-0 down away from home in the first half but shocked the Mariners and their fans in the second half.

Goals Alaeddine Ajaraie and Guillermo Fernandez within a couple of minutes changed the look of the game before Gurmeet took the matter in his hands and won the penalty shoot for his side. It was nothing short of a dream come true for John Abraham and his side. NorthEast United will begin their campaign with an away clash against the league’s latest entrants Mohammedan SC.

Let us take a look at the Highlanders’ ISL schedule until the end of the year.
