Chennaiyin FC went down to 10 men in the second half.
Chennaiyin FC defeated hosts NorthEast United FC 3-2 in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 match held at the Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium on October 17th. This is the fourth instance this season where the Highlanders have failed to win after scoring first.
Nestor Albiach netted the first goal in the game’s first four minutes. A pass by Jithin found Parthib on the right side, who assisted Nestor for the opener.
Chennaiyin FC slowly gained control of the match. Wilmar Jordán scored the equalizer with a header, giving Gurmeet no chance to save. A clumsy foul by Míchel Zabaco on Ryan Edwards inside the penalty box led the referee to award a penalty. Lukas Brambilla converted it for Chennaiyin FC’s second goal.
Alaeddine Ajaraie and Parthib had two golden goal-scoring opportunities in the final minutes of the first half but failed to score. Parthib’s header went off target, while Ajaraie’s one-on-one shot found the body of goalkeeper Samik Mitra.
Wilmar Jordán scored the third goal in the 50th minute. He beat the offside trap, controlled the pass from Laldinliana Renthlei, and finished with his right foot. Aladdin Ajare scored his fifth goal in five ISL matches, converting a penalty in the 88th minute. Laldinliana Renthlei was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.
Here are the Indian player ratings for the match.
NorthEast United FC (By Parashar Kalita)
Gurmeet: 5.0
Not a good day for Gurmeet. He conceded three goals, and in all of them, there was hardly anything he could do. He made only one save in the entire match.
Jithin M.S: 6
His speedy runs troubled the Chennaiyin FC backline. He played a role in the Highlanders’ first goal, finding Parthib, who assisted Nestor for the opener.
Parthib Gogoi: 6.0
Assisted Nestor for the first goal. Missed a golden goal-scoring opportunity in the 43rd minute when his header went off target.
Asheer Akhtar: 6.0
Failed to win the header in the 25th minute, allowing Wilmar Jordán to direct it towards the goal. However, he made some crucial and outstanding clearances in the 28th minute.
Dinesh Singh: 5.5
Returned to the starting eleven after Robin Yadav was sent off in the previous match against FC Goa. An average day for him, with three clearances.
Tondonba Singh: 5.0
The defender attempted some attacking runs on the right wing in the first half but had minimal impact on the game. He made two clearances.
Muthu Mayakkannan: 5.0
Made a crucial block in the 10th minute of the match. His mistake gave away the corner, which Chennaiyin FC converted for the equalizer. He struggled to hold the midfield. Took a shot attempt in the 69th minute. Had a very low passing accuracy, completing only 12 passes out of 23.
Substitution:
Thoi Singh: NA
Came on in place of Parthib Gogoi in the 70th minute. He tried to make an impact, but it was not very effective.
Chennaiyin FC (By Akash Dhanagaran)
Samik Mitra- 6.5
The pathetic defense made it impossible to stop the initial goal. However, he made a great save inside the box. The passes were not accurate, especially in the long balls. Great clearance, when the defense was off in the extra time.
PC Laldinpuia- 6.0
Was on the mid-field most of the time and had some on-and-off long passes. Had some costly mistakes, which made it easy for the opponent players to enter the square.
Ankit Mukherjee- 6.5
Delivered some great assists and was seen mostly on the midfield on the defensive side, taking the game forward with some good passes and clearances.
Irfan Yadwad- 6.5
Active throughout the play, when he was on the ground and had a chance to score in the initial stage, but the shot was off-target.
Lalrinliana Hnamte- 7.0
Active throughout the ground and assisted with accurate passes, most of his dribbles and duels were successful and was a key player in the match.
Laldinliana Renthlei- 7.0
Renthlei was too busy on the right side of the ground and was the default thrower. Several accurate passes were made and assisted several times taking the ball to the opposite corner, however, a couple of yellow cards turned red.
Farukh Choudhary- 6.5
Too active on the left side of the ground and had a couple of off-target strikes. The ground duels and tackles were on top but lost several possessions.
Substitutes
Gurkirat Singh- 5.5
Entered the game in the extra time, but didn’t have much role to play.
Vincy Barretto- 6.0
Entered the game in the extra time, and was active with the ball, however had only less time in the ground to showcase his game.
