Churchill Brothers showed greater attacking intent after the interval and pushed hard for an equaliser. However, NorthEast United maintained their defensive organisation and held firm to preserve their advantage.

The victory also saw the Highlanders provisionally strengthen their position at the top of the standings, with Mohun Bagan SG scheduled to face Odisha FC in the day’s second fixture.

NorthEast United took the lead through González, who produced a clever finish with the outside of his boot. The move originated from a quick counterattack following a defensive lapse from Churchill Brothers, with Jithin MS delivering the assist.

The visitors eventually sealed the result in the 93rd minute.
