NorthEast United’s new forward has become the second-ever player to score in his first three ISL games.

Having started in 2014, the Indian Super League (ISL) has grown to be one of the most-watched football leagues in the world. Over the years, quite a few players have become household names in India owing to their goal-scoring prowess.

The likes of Stiven Mendoza, Ferran Corominas, Bartholomew Ogbeche, Nerijus Valskis, Roy Krishna, and of course, Sunil Chhetri among others, have created multiple goalscoring records. However, there is a very special record that is only held by two players as of now.

Over its 11-year history, only two players have managed to score three goals in three consecutive games in their debut ISL season. They are Elano Blumer and the newest inductee to this exclusive club – Alaeddine Ajaraie.

The former Brazil international was signed as a marquee player by Chennaiyin FC in 2014. Elano was the youngest marquee player back then – aged 33. After his much-hyped arrival, the former Manchester City star set the Indian Super League ablaze from Matchweek 1 itself.

Elano scored a freekick in Chennaiyin FC’s first-ever game against FC Goa and continued this streak for their first six ISL games. Overall, the Brazilian scored eight goals in 11 outings for Marina Machans that season. Elano would have certainly added more to his tally but a calf injury kept him out of action for the latter part of the league.

Chennaiyin FC finished the season on top of the points table. However, the Blues lost to rivals Kerala Blasters in the semi-finals and were eliminated from the competition. On a personal note, Elano Blumer did win the Golden Boot, finishing as the top scorer in ISL 2014.

Northeast United FC signed Alaeddine Ajaraie in the 2024 summer transfer window as the player moved on a free transfer from Moroccan club FAR Rabat. Within a few games, the 31-year-old has already become a part of the club’s history, having played an important part in their Durand Cup 2024-winning campaign.

Ajaraie scored two goals and provided two assists as Northeast United won their first trophy in the club’s history. The Moroccan has since carried his rich form to the Indian Super League as well.

Playing his debut ISL campaign, Ajaraie has scored in each of Northeast United’s games against Mohammedan SC, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, and Kerala Blasters, helping his side win four points from their three ISL games so far.

Having already scored three goals in three games, can Alaeddine Ajaraie level or overtake Elano Blumer’s record of scoring in six consecutive ISL games in his debut season? Let us know your thoughts.
