East Bengal currently sit at the 11th spot in ISL table.

Oscar Bruzon’s East Bengal will be desperate to get back to winning ways when they host Kerala Blasters in the Indian Super League (ISL) at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata on Friday (24 January).

The Red & Gold Brigade are on a four-match winless run and that has caused them to fall 10 points behind sixth-place Odisha FC. Despite that, Oscar Bruzon remains cautiously optimistic that his side could claw their way back into fighting for a playoff spot, as he stated: “If we can win three straight games, we feel that we can do it. We can’t throw in the towel. If we could’ve accumulated four-five points in the last three games, we’d have been talking about the Kerala Blasters game as a final to jump into the sixth position.

“Our dream is still alive, we have eight games to go and we still feel that our primary objective is to get three straight wins – something we haven’t done before. It’s about being minded and going for three good results before looking into a top-6 place,” he also added.

On Dimitro Diamantakos’ concerning form

Dimitrios Diamantakos has frustrated some fans with his underwhelming performances, as he’s without a goal in the last four games. When speaking about his goal-scoring responsibility and the team’s general attacking style, Bruzon explained: “I think that there are some moments of the game when we play very good football, we are trying to be the dominant side when the easiest thing when you are in the lower part of the table is defending yourself and minimize risks. I believe in my team’s ability to get to the full potential, if you see the last game you’d see seven-eight total attacking players.

“We had a lot of chances, the likes of PV Vishnu and Richard Celis had big chances. The reality that we are about to click, we are about to connect. Everything I’ve been working for, I’ve had 4-5 players who could easily score goals (at Bashundhara Kings). I want multiple goal-scorers at East Bengal, I don’t want to put the entire burden on one player. If we are playing offensive players, it’s to distribute the responsibility of conversion.

“Our xG (expected goals) is a lot. This is something we are working on, converting chances better, and getting goals and we need to ensure we don’t need 20-25 chances to score a goal. We are dominating, doing a lot of good things but we have to admit we are not being better than our opponents in both boxes. Football is decided in the boxes.

“If I wasn’t happy with Dimantakos’ performance, I’d have kicked him out of the pitch. I need to give confidence to him. Strikers are players of cycles. Of course, when they don’t score, we can tell he isn’t performing well but when he starts scoring he’ll be on the edge. I’ve seen that his eyes are full of confidence and determination, I feel he’ll have a good game, score and stop all the talks about him tomorrow,” he finished.
