East Bengal edged past NorthEast United FC in a game of drama.

Oscar Bruzon’s East Bengal picked up a stunning 1-0 win over NorthEast United to pick up their first three points of the 2024-25 Indian Super League (ISL) campaign on Friday (November 24).

A solitary goal from Dimitrios Diamantakos in the first half was enough to help the Red & Gold Brigade finally break their winless run in the ISL and get their campaign properly underway.

Oscar Bruzon’s side earned most of their praise for their sturdy defensive effort in the win over NorthEast United, who came into the match as the highest scorers in the ISL. Despite that, winger PV Vishnu also produced an admirable performance in which he helped create a few big chances and helped out defensively through the left wing.

Oscar Bruzon’s insights

After the game, Oscar Bruzon reserved some special praise for Vishnu and stated: “I saw highlights of the attacking moves of my team and I’ve seen that he helped start 50% of our attacks. That shows the performance of Vishnu.

“He’s a young guy and we took working with him to help him improve his decision-making. I knew that he could’ve scored in the first minute. The idea was to play him for 55-60 minutes and that his performance might drop after that, but he looked well until the last part of the game. It’s not easy to replace players like Naorem Mahesh Singh and Nandha Kumar Sekar,” Oscar Bruzon also added.

PV Vishnu came in for the suspended Nandhakumar Sekar in the game, as he tormented the Highlanders backline with his tricky movement through the left. He also helped our defense with eight duels won and six possession recoveries, frustrating the visitors with his gritty defensive nature through his winger.

Bruzon might look to give more playing time to the 22-year-old after seeing his inspired display against NorthEast United.

Even though Nandhakumar and Mahesh Singh are both back in action soon, the gaffer might be enticed to give Vishnu more starting roles to maintain the positive energy through the left-wing when East Bengal travel to face Chennaiyin FC on Saturday (7 December).
