The second leg is set to be extremely fierce with players on both sides willing to impress and help their teams to the ISL final.
Mohun Bagan and Odisha FC are set to meet in the second leg of their 2023-24 Indian Super League (ISL) semi-final on 28 April 2024 at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. The first leg saw the Juggernauts produce a memorable comeback to secure a 2-1 win over the Mariners.
It was a highly entertaining, fiery encounter with high tempers between the sides that boast of several high-profile domestic and foreign players. Judging by their impact, the second leg is likely to be defined by the performances of the key figures on either side.
As the second leg approaches, here is a look at the three key battles that will play a huge deciding factor in the eventual outcome:
3. Hector Yuste vs Roy Krishna
Hector Yuste did not have the best of games in the first leg but made a few notable defensive contributions. The centre-back led the backline well, making two clearances and three interceptions. However, he could have done better in keeping Roy Krishna contained.
The Odisha FC striker scored the winning goal in the first half as Hector Yuste was unable to deal with a tricky ball. His error allowed Krishna to send the Juggernauts into the lead. As the second leg nears, the duel between Yuste and Krishna is set to play a huge role in the outcome of the game.
2. Manvir Singh vs Jerry Lalrinzuala
Manvir Singh shocked the capacity crowd at the Kalinga Stadium by scoring with a thumping header in the third minute of the game. Apart from the goal itself, the attacker worked extremely hard on the flanks and delivered five crosses for his team. With the support of the home fans behind him, Singh can make a difference once again.
However, he must come up with a strategy to overcome Jerry Lalrinzuala who is having one of his best seasons in the ISL. The experienced full-back won five ground duels in the first leg and has the ability to go toe-to-toe with the best of the attackers.
1. Ahmed Jahouh vs Anirudh Thapa
The midfield battle is often the most important one among the many on a football pitch. In the first leg, Ahmed Jahouh ran all over the Mohun Bagan players, giving Odisha FC a stranglehold in the middle of the park. He created several scoring chances for his team and the Mariners cannot afford to let him orchestrate the proceedings once again.
Anirudh Thapa is one of the most complete Indian midfielders and can be unplayable on his day. The box-to-box midfielder must stay close to Jahouh without ball possession and prevent him space to operate. At the same time, he will be crucial in transitions for the Mariners. It would be interesting to see which individual outshines the other in the second leg.
