Mohun Bagan become the first team in ISL history to win the league shield in consecutive seasons.
Mohun Bagan secured the 2024-25 Indian Super League (ISL) Shield in dramatic fashion with a last-gasp 1-0 victory over Odisha FC at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Sunday, February 23. The Mariners endured a tough contest but found the breakthrough in stoppage time when substitute Dimitri Petratos unleashed a stunning strike in the 93rd minute to seal the win.
With this result, Mohun Bagan have amassed 52 points from 22 matches, putting them beyond the reach of FC Goa, who can only finish with a maximum of 51 points. This historic achievement makes the Mariners the first club in ISL history to win back-to-back league shields. That being said let us take a look at the teams who have won the ISL Shield in the past!
2019-20: FC Goa
FC Goa became the first-ever winner of the ISL Shield back in the 2019-20 season. Inspired by Sergio Lobera’s attack-minded playing style, the Gaurs dominated the league stages – winning 12 of their 18 matches. They finished the league stages with 39 points, four more than ATK, and qualified for the 2021 AFC Champions League group stages.
2020-21: Mumbai City
Lobera brought his magic to Mumbai City FC after joining them in 2020. Bringing some of his FC Goa players with him to Mumbai, he revitalized the Islanders’ fortunes and made them play some stunning attacking football.
Mumbai City maintained impressive consistency in league stages, winning 12 of their 20 matches. They finished on 40 points, the same as second-place ATK Mohun Bagan but pipped the Kolkata side in dramatic fashion through a better head-to-head record.
2021-22: Jamshedpur FC
Owen Coyle played a pivotal role in helping Jamshedpur FC win their first major championship in the ISL Shield title in the 2021-22 season. After his impressive work at Chennaiyin FC, Coyle made some inspired foreign signings at Jamshedpur – especially bringing in the brilliant Greg Stewart. He also helped improve a lot of domestic players and played an efficient style that saw Jamshedpur clinch the ISL Shield after winning 13 of their 20 games.
2022-23: Mumbai City
Mumbai City became the first ISL side to win the League Shield twice. This time, Englishman Des Buckingham created a dominant squad that flexed their muscles under the City Football Group system. The Islanders dominated their way to the league title, winning 14 of their 20 games and losing only twice. They scored 54 goals and produced some thrilling attacking football to win their second ISL Shield and book a place in the AFC Champions League.
2023-24: Mohun Bagan Super Giant
Mohun Bagan were crowned Shield winners after they defeated Mumbai City FC in a dramatic match. Mohun Bagan Super clinched their maiden ISL league Shield.
