Three Ways Danish Farooq can improve East Bengal in 2026-27 season

Farooq signed a two-year contract with the ISL champions

East Bengal FC have strengthened their midfield line for the upcoming 2026-27 season by completing the signing of Danish Farooq on a free transfer.

The 30-year-old midfielder opted to leave Kerala Blasters FC after the end of the 2025-26 campaign, and he now looks to be ready to make an impact for the defending Indian Super League (ISL) champions going forward.

In the form of Farooq, East Bengal FC are definitely getting an experienced footballer with nearly a decade of playing in Indian football.

The 30-year-old has also earned a few caps for the India football team and has gained a lot of knowledge of how things at the top of the Indian football scene in his recent stints with Kerala Blasters FC as well as Bengaluru FC.

The Red and Gold have signed Farooq to add much more depth to their squad ahead of what can be a tenacious 2026-27 season, where they might play in the AFC Champions League Two as well.

The Indian midfielder will look to make a positive impact in his debut campaign to help the Kolkata side not only compete strongly to defend their ISL title, but also succeed in Asia and other cup competitions.

Here, we look at a few ways in which Farooq’e signing can help improve East Bengal in the upcoming campaign.

3. Enhanced set-piece threat

Even though Danish Farooq might not have scored any goals in the 2025-26 ISL campaign for Kerala Blasters FC, he possesses some decent goal-scoring acumen in his arsenal. The 30-year-old can often make good use of his height and physical traits to be a real thorn for players in set-piece scenarios.

As the Indian midfielder excels at winning crucial duels for his side, he can also be a threat in corners or indirect free-kicks – often getting at the end of them to try and divert the efforts onto the goal. Hence, Farooq probably can be a new threat for East Bengal’s set-piece scenario, as he can excel from the impressive delivery that the Torchbearers possess from those situations.

The 30-year-old midfielder, of course, needs to train hard and work closely with his new teammates to look to score more often from set-piece situations, ensuring that he can convert when the ball does find him inside the box.

Moreover, Farooq’s intimidating presence can force the attention of opposition players – as he can also open up empty room for his teammates during set-pieces to aid their chances of scoring more often.

2. Imposing more physicality in midfield battle

With the signing of a player like Farooq, East Bengal can now afford to get much feistier when it comes to duelling with opposition players in the midfield. They are getting a player who excels in physical duels, with the 30-year-old being a pretty strong player who can make good use of his physical attributes.

Last season, Farooq was able to make 41 defensive contributions for Kerala Blasters FC, and that also included 10 tackles.

He only committed 10 fouls in the entire ISL campaign, which itself shows that Farooq can be smart when it comes to knowing when to commit to challenges without fouling opponents. The added physicality factor that the 30-year-old midfielder could bring to East Bengal FC will help them be able to harass opposition midfielders by winning key duels and refusing to be bullied in the centre of the pitch.

It will, of course, be upon Farooq himself to ensure that he can throw his weight around and utilize his physical attributes strongly enough to be able to intimidate opposition midfielders and give his side an upper hand in midfield battles in matches next season.

1. Raised aggression factor

Danish Farooq’s presence will definitely have a positive impact on East Bengal, being more aggressive in trying to regain possession in the midfield battle. The former Kerala Blasters FC midfielder is not really the kind of player to sit back and absorb pressure, as he really likes to be as aggressive as his manager allows him to be in order to put extra pressure on the opposition players.

The 30-year-old is really good with his pressing acumen, being able to close down opponents quickly to force unwanted errors and regain possession in key areas.

Last season, Farooq averaged well over two possession recoveries per game in the ISL, and he will be tasked with being aggressive to help East Bengal FC regain possession at times when their opponents are vulnerable.

Farooq hasn’t been signed by East Bengal FC for being a huge creative or goal-scoring threat, but his ball-winning acumen and aggressive nature should help bring more fire to the East Bengal midfield.

This heightened aggression boost that Farooq will bring to the Kolkata side will help them be much more mobile and free-flowing in the midfield, as they can afford to play on the front-foot and look to be energetic in executing a press on opponents.
