Three ways Lee Erwin can fire up the Mohun Bagan attack

Another striker to partner up with Jamie Maclaren

Mohun Bagan have fired up their frontline with the signing of Scottish forward Lee Erwin before the start of the 2026-27 Indian Super League (ISL) campaign.

The 32-year-old forward has ended up being their sixth foreigner for the season ahead and has been roped in as the replacement for the departed Jason Cummings in the squad as well.

In Erwin, the Mariners now have a new experienced goal-scorer who will be bringing a wealth of knowledge and uniqueness to their attack. The Scottish forward has had a pretty eventful career so far, playing for notable clubs like Leeds United, Kilmarnock, Motherwell and St. Mirren in his career.

He’s even had a short stint in Asia playing for Lebanese side AL Ahed FC, which should give him some familiarity with how the football scene is in countries around the continent.

Mohun Bagan have signed Erwin to bolster their goal-scoring options and bring that extra bite to their attack, which showed signs of weariness at the Durand Cup – where they only scored one goal in the knockout rounds – which was in the final 4-1 loss to East Bengal. The Mariners have high hopes for the 32-year-old forward to be an inspired frontline option for them and bolster their push to win the 2026-27 ISL title.

Here, we look at the three ways that Lee Erwin’s presence can fire up the Mohun Bagan frontline.

3. Physical presence to trouble opposition defenders

Lee Erwin for Mohun Bagan.

Lee Erwin is arriving at Mohun Bagan as a pretty physical player for the standards of the ISL, and at 6’2, he definitely has the right kind of build to be a tormenting figure for opposition defenders. He will be looking to use his physical prowess to be a thorn for the defenders, working hard to win the offensive duels and drag defenders into uncomfortable positions in matches.

Erwin can be crucial in inspiring more fluidity in Mohun Bagan’s build-up play to create big goal-scoring chances, as he can confuse defenders if able to move away from his assigned position to help with the link-up play to send teammates into the open areas in the final third.

Erwin will look to bully the centre-backs by being a conniving figure in the opposition half, playing mind games with his duel-winning ability and tendency to outmuscle many of the Indian players. If he can help destabilise the opponents’ defensive shape with his link-up and hold-up play, the Scottish forward can raise the unpredictability levels in Mohun Bagan’s attacking structure and make them more entertaining to watch.

2. Leading the press to motivate Mohun Bagan attackers

Something that Mohun Bagan seemingly struggled to do in the key Durand Cup matches that Panagiotis Dilmperis will look to improve is their high pressing ability to trouble the opposition defenders. The Greek gaffer will want his players to be more aggressive with their pressing, to close down opposition players in their own half to win the ball back in promising positions and initiate dangerous counter-attacking chances.

For that, they’ll need a striker who can lead the aggressive pressing really well, and Lee Erwin should be able to help them with that.

The 32-year-old can be a pretty energetic figure in the opposition half and he’ll look to win over the gaffer by being precise and relentless in pressing the opposition defenders when they try to play the ball out of the backline. He’ll need to be smart with his pressing tactics and also look to motivate those around him to be bolder in stepping up and closing down areas for the opponents to reclaim possession in the danger zones.

If he’s able to really nail his high pressing qualities, then Erwin would not only have a positive impact on the overall energy levels of the Mohun Bagan team but also help them realize Dilmperis’ vision rather effectively.

1. Being a clinical outlet inside the penalty area

The biggest reason why Mohun Bagan has roped in Lee Erwin in the first place is because of his goal-scoring acumen and the kind of danger figure he can be in & around the opponents’ penalty area. The Scottish forward has made a career out of scoring impressive goals from inside the box, and he’ll need to elevate that quality of his to be a dangerous goal-scoring option for the Mariners.

While Erwin will be required to help with the link-up play and also contribute with his defensive actions, his priority will be to nail his positioning inside the box and dupe the centre-backs in the key areas.

He needs to showcase his in-game IQ by beating defenders to the box inside the area, and finishing off the big chances that come his way in the promising positions as well.

If Erwin is able to get into his groove in scoring regular goals and being a reliable outlet inside the opposition penalty area, he can play a key role in winning many games for Mohun Bagan and strengthen their chances of reclaiming the ISL title.

Who is Mohun Bagan’s latest foreign signing?

Mohun Bagan have signed Scottish centre-forward Lee Erwin as their sixth foreign player ahead of the 2026-27 ISL season.

How can Lee Erwin benefit Jamie Maclaren?

Erwin’s arrival will provide healthy competition for the No. 9 position while also reducing the goal-scoring burden on Maclaren. The Australian will have to maintain consistent performances to retain his starting spot.
